Looking for answers to life's questions

The saying is, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” It’s something which I seem to have a lot of experience. I’ve had a pattern since I became ill more than 3 years ago to get a ton of rest, watch some TV, read and eat food that required very little effort on my part. There is a V groove in my carpet from my bed to the kitchen to the chair and back again. Any wonder why I’ve gained (a lot of) weight?

Most mornings I would get up, get a cup of coffee, do my journaling, (morning pages) meditate, read my email and think about exercising. I HATE exercising. Just beat me with a stick and get it over with. I was hungry after the coffee and all the reading so it was time to make something to eat. You can’t exercise on a full stomach so more time would go by and I’d find more excuses. The fitness center is at the bottom on a tiny hill and it’s free though quite small. Another excuse.

Something has changed. I’m not sure what it is but I’m feeling better. I found a new spiritual center on Palm Sunday. It felt like I was home. Then, trying once again to do my Qi Gong exercises, I noticed that I’m not losing my balance if I do it early in the morning. Logic would have it that I change my pattern. Ok, I have a logical mind. Now I get up, turn on the DVD player and begin. One good day lead to the next. I only took Easter Sunday off. I didn’t need to but it was a good excuse. Then I read Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach for that day and begin writing my morning pages. Coffee comes with the e-mail. Yay! It’s watered down, half decaf, half regular coffee but since I’m recovering from a stress induced illness, I try to take it easy on my system. I just can’t give up the coffee.

On nice days I’ve been taking a walk, with my cane, of course, increasing the distance slowly after the long shut-in winter. I have no yard right now but trying to plant a bit in pots to insure outside activity. I’m finding that I can sew again and even concentrate enough to tackle a project or two that has been on hold all these years.

I've had this for years. Any daily inspiration works.

My health is the number one priority, and I’m finally acting on it. No more sitting and waiting for it to return. Being a person who requires routine, I’ve turned mine upside down and do the hard thing first. It will get easier with time. The e-mail will have to go to later in the day as well. I’ll scan it for business that needs to be taken care of, then proceed to the next hardest job. Does this mean I’m no longer insane? Hmmm. I doubt it, but we can hope.

Good for you, Marlene! I was where you are five years ago and was lucky enough to hurt my leg and undergo a course of physical therapy. They taught me how to get and stay healthy and I’ve never looked back. Now if I don’t exercise I miss it. If you can stick to a program for a month you’ll miss it if you don’t do it, too.
By the way, if you exercise on an empty stomach you burn muscle, not fat. There’s one excuse you can’t use anymore 😉

    • Thanks for going through this with me virtually. I am so grateful for every little bit of healing and grateful that it is an option. Healing enough to drive, sew and exercise even a little, gives me a great deal of encouragement. This is my third attempt to reply. Hope it works this time.

    • Thank you so much. Take a walk in the woods for me too. I’ve been confined to sidewalks or the mall until this goes away. Now I see a glimmer of real hope.

  3. I am so happy for you, not because you are exercising, well not just that, but because you are beginning to feel better and are able to add back in activities you enjoy.

    • Thanks Lois, I’m happy to have good news to share. I was beginning to think I should just accept this and cope. Now that I can do the downward postures, I know wellness is around the corner. This has been the weirdest illness I’ve ever run across. A year ago when I tried to sew, I got so dizzy I had to lay down to quell the nausea. I’ve missed the ability to exercise.

  4. Sounds like things are totally going in a good direction for you my friend! Very happy to hear it. I’ve never heard of Qi Gong, something new for exercising? I generally do have a morning routine, or is it a habit, I never know the diff. Blossum wakes me up around 7:30 (no need for an alarm), I make 6 cups of coffee and toast. I listen to the morning news and look at bloggy mail. Then the rest of the day is a crap shoot…..I rarely have a plan and go wherever the wind blows…..maybe I’d get more done if I make a list but then I’d never know where I put it…LOL. Hugs K

    • Thanks K. It’s like something just snapped and let loose a little. Qi Gong is something new. I found it when I was looking for something other than Yoga which I couldn’t do. No downward facing positions or I was on my face. 🙂 It’s a gentle way to rebuild and I started with the Healing one for a year, now I’m doing the weight loss that has 2 versions. Beginners and intermediate. I go back and forth depending on how much time and energy I have on any given day. I don’t need an alarm clock either. Routine is necessary to me but I build in a great deal of flexibility. If I didn’t have a list, I’m sure I’d forget to out of my chair. 🙂 I keep my list on my phone. Never lose that…often. Hugs back, M

  6. Marlene, I’m so happy for you. I’m also a creature of routine (you need to be with young kids) and find it centers my day. I do all of my exercising in the morning, too. Unfortunately, I have some bad routines as well, like stopping for a Diet Pepsi after a client appointment, exercise class, before I pick up my son at school, etc. It’s a habit I need to give up (and have in the past) but then I fall off the wagon. You’ve inspired me to try again.

This post made me so happy. Congratulations for doing something good for yourself and then sticking with it. You’re amazing.

    • Thank you Alys. Some days are still rough but having more good days. Kids do force a routine. That was so long ago. A job will do the same thing but when you have nowhere to go and nothing pressing to do, bad habits run amok. I think I’ve wrangled those little buggers.:) I won’t say a word about the diet soda other than I can no longer imbibe

  7. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your blog! I have enjoyed reading your posts about your journey. I find it difficult to stick to a routine completely made by myself, but if there is some component where others depend on me, I tend to be able to stick with my whole routine.

  8. I applaud you. Of course, now that you told us of your good changes, you have to keep them up. It’s the worst part of telling anybody anything.

    • Thank you. So true, so true. It’s extra hard when my home is inhabited by company that keeps a different schedule. I am also quite flexible but the routine helps bring order into my chaos.:) Telling keeps me honest with myself. So far, so good.

  9. So glad you are finding your way back to health. Keep taking the baby steps, improvement will happen gradually. I find walking the dog every day and meeting a friend to do it with, helps enormously.

    • Thanks for reading. Yes it’s baby steps all the way and perserverance. I walked the dog the first two years until she passed. She kept me moving. Still working on making friends in my new location but did a long walk in addition to my qigong today with such beautiful weather. My sewing is sitting there looking at me. It’s so beautiful but I must work now. 🙂
