Looking for answers to life's questions

Last weekend I asked my daughter to drive us to the small town of Mt. Angel about 30 minutes from my home. The town was at one time settled with Benedictine Monks and families from Bavaria giving it a Germanic flavor. This weekend was their Oktoberfest.

I was not going for pretzels and beer though. My mission was for pickled garlic. I’ve been searching for some since I finished my last jars. I found, several years ago, that pickled garlic helped to naturally bring down my cholesterol numbers. Since mine runs high due to genetics and I refuse to take prescription drugs, I’m always looking for natural alternatives. Oddly, or maybe not, sugar also raises my triglycerides, so I’m working hard to keep that to a minimum as well. Once my 2 quarts of pickled garlic were procured, we proceed on to the rest of the festival.

My daughter found local lavender honey and a silly crocheted hat.

She had more fun with this hat though in Portland, weird goes unnoticed.

The young woman selling honey for her friend, was wearing a top that reflected many colors in her eyes. I was so taken by how beautiful the soft sage green in her shirt brought all your attention to her eyes. The shirt neckline was banded by autumn orange and flecks of brown that were also reflected in her eye center. Her entire eye was rimmed in a soft warm blue. I mentioned to her how stunning the shirt was on her and we began a conversation that led to her wedding dress. My strong suggestion was to avoid stark white and lean toward ivory or creamy whites. She had the loveliest tanned skin tone and I suggested that she should paint her bedroom walls that color once she is married. For me, that was the most fun of the day. I love helping people find their most enhancing colors. She asked for my card to possibly ask for more color consulting regarding her wedding. Even though I no longer do it professionally, it’s still fun when I get the opportunity.

Mein hut. Finally a chance to wear it.

Then we took just a few pictures since there were so many people around. We came home early as my daughter’s Fibromyalgia makes walking a lot painful and I had what I came for primarily.

My day was capped off when I looked out over the balcony to see two of my neighbors out with their dogs. I had to take photos. They played so nicely together that I just had to smile for the rest of the day. Can you figure out which is Boomer and which is Charlie? What do you do for fun?

  1. I didn’t know that about pickled garlic, but I’m not surprised. It seems to be one of those amazing wonder foods. Looks like a fun day.

How interesting that you used to do colors for people. I learned a bit about that in a class years ago. Lots of fun.

    Is Boomer the little fella?

    • Boomer is the Basset. His bark fills the entire neighborhood, living up to his name. Charlie is the little snoopy dog. He has no bark…yet.
Colors are a tricky thing. There were so many ways of doing it and my husband asked me why my way (I learned) was better than the other way. It was in the way it brought attention to the eyes and brought out the personality of the individual. Every single person was unique. No prepackaged system for me. Had to that the hard way too.:D I’m a quarter down on the quart jar of garlic already.

      • The dogs are both sweet. It’s always interesting to me how varied (and how loud) some of the smaller dogs can be. I love them all.

I love that you took a unique approach to colors. That makes more sense doesn’t it? The eyes are windows to the soul.

        Wow…that garlic is going fast.

  2. I too would guess Boomer is the little one. Those pictures look like you really were in Germany, love the patios. I use garlic, honey and lemons for most of my healing needs. Now and then a bit of apple cider vinegar works wonders on a bite or sting. I have never seen pickled garlic, I’ll have to keep my eyes open for it now. Looks like you had a lovely day.

    • Pickled garlic is usually made up by very small companies and very difficult to find. It’s helped me so much that I have been able to avoid prescription drugs. I use a lot of lemon and cider vinegar as well but am steering clear of honey for awhile. Have to watch the blood sugar very closely for now. Once the weight is in check. I’ll get to enjoy it a little again. Right now, I have to stick to Stevia. 20 more pounds and I’ll have a green light. Hopefully before spring. I sure comes off harder than it goes on. Oh, Boomer is the Basset. He lives up to his name. You can hear him for miles. But we love him. The kids in the neighborhood think it’s fun to get him going.

      • Marlene, I use garlic a lot in my meals and for natural healing, I’ll have to look for pickled garlic and see how I like it. Good luck on your weight loss, I am working very hard right now to reduce my weight, as you know it’s not as easy when you have physical limitations. 😦

  3. Hi Marlene, sorry I’m behind. My WP emails were all messed up and you didn’t come up in my feed (???) hopefully I have it aced now. Hey, You are such a cutie in your hat. I love sauerkraut and boiled potatoes when I visit German towns. Also those little donuts tied in knots with icing sugar…I forget what they’re called. Mt. Angel does look like European with the nice balcony baskets of flowers. I saw your message about Charlie and Boomer to Alys, so I won’t cheat. But I was thinking it was a trick question and was going to say the little guy, LOL. Both cute too!

    • Now I’m hungry. Boiled potatoes were a treat in our house with braunschwiager. If dad was gone on maneuvers, mom would make it for us. I’m salivating right now. Mt Angel has a bit of Bavarian flair but nothing like Leavenworth, WA. That’s a fun place but not as easy to get to. The little beagle hasn’t even barked yet. He’s just a handful.

  4. I love Mt Angel and have visited there many times, but never for Oktoberfest, because of the crowds. Having just moved down from Portland to Salem, I thought we might go this year, but I guess I missed it. Did you make it up to the church? It’s fabulous inside… sooo beautiful.
Thanks for dropping my by blog and leaving a “like.” 🙂

    • Hi Kerri. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a note. Sometimes I don’t quite get there. I didn’t get to the church as my daughter was wearing out and she is my driver. I’ve lived here in Portland a year now full time. I’ll be checking out more of your blog as I’m a sewer too though not an artist. Just the basics. To me fabric is art and I have a huge collection. Working my way through it. I’ve never been in Salem, just gone through to Albany where my niece lives. Maybe one day. Hope to hear from you again.

      • I completely agree with your statement, “fabric is art.” I know my years of working with fabric is integral to the art I’m currently engaged in coming into being. It was all the years of thinking about color, texture and design that we do in sewing garments. Having just moved from Portland to Salem, I know ALL about huge collections. I had to let go of boxes and boxes of fabric… that was wrenching, but I still have more that I can probably ever make my way through. Oh well… that goes with the territory of being creative. Happy sewing and I will definitely check out your projects. 🙂
