Looking for answers to life's questions

Spring has sprung in our little corner of the world. Winter tried to keep its grasp teasing us while we tried to decide whether a coat or a light jacket were in order. Layers are the operative word of this month. Pile it on so you can take it off. Ok, get your minds out of the rain-soaked gutters.

I’ve been a busy girl on some days. Other days I have done next to nothing. The nothing days were for observation; my favorite kind of day. Last week was my second physical therapy appointment. Wet and gray the day was not lending itself to anything cheery. I kept my head down to keep my glasses dry except to cross the street. I found out I cannot do parking structures anymore with my vision difficulties. I’m nauseous before I’m parked so I get to walk a bit more. When I looked out across the sea of cars I noticed the ground look as though covered with snow. I walked faster. Hmmm. The closer I got the deeper it looked. Oh my word, did I miss something? When I finally got a good look, the snow was…pink Yes, lots and lots of pink…blossoms. They covered every inch of ground blown or rained off the trees above. Too bad I only get to therapy once a month. I missed them on the trees. Darn!

Spring may be short this year. So many places miss it almost entirely. I knew it was here because the ducks were ducking. Quacking all over the place. Did you know ducks will eat the cat food left in the dishes on porches? No wonder they like going from apartment to apartment. On my walk back from the market the other day, I spotted these baby ducks scampering around. Mom was trying desperately to take a nap but there was so much interference. I worried about the chicks so close to the road. They did seem content to stay within beaks reach of mom.

You know how it is when you need a nap and the kids won't leave you alone.

Now getting to the days I did do something; well here you go. I finished this quilt top I bought 5 or 6 years ago before I got Bells and could still sew. It was a kit and hadn’t realized it was so expensive but was too embarrassed to admit it was over my budget. I’m not a pink and blue kind of girl but loved the tea cups. Peach and blue are more my style but now I’m happy to have this part done with only the back, batting and quilting together to complete before binding. That will take longer than the top. What do I do with it when it’s finished? Maybe put it up for sale.

Love the teacups and satiny fabric, just not the colors

The next project was just a test of my endurance with the embroidery machine. This little number took at least 8 hours to complete the stitching. I tend to run the machine a bit slower in case of, well all kinds of problems. Especially if it’s the first time I’ve stitched out the design. The second time will be easier because I’ll know where the hiccups are. I’m still trying to decide how I will use this. Pillow, apron top or will it be a wall hanging?

Hoping the second time looks better but I loved the design

Anyone want to put in their two cents worth? I’m open to suggestions. Have you found pink snow in your neighborhood?

From my heart to yours,
Marlene Herself

  1. Pink snow! How wonderful!! I have never even imagined such a thing – a gift only given when two seasons overlap – it looks so very pretty 🙂

I love your little embroidery piece and the quote – I think it would be beautiful framed. I’m sure whatever you decide to do with it it will look just lovely!!

    • Thank you Pauline. I have seen blossoms on the ground before but never in that quantity. I must have missed the hard rain that brought them all down at once and before the gardeners came by to rake them all up. It was a stunning view. I’m glad you like the embroidery. I hit a snag with it so it puckered a bit more than usual. Books and gardens are my two favorite things in the world so it was a perfect design. I could frame it with fabric and make a replacement wall hanging for the front door, but I don’t have a garden…yet. ;( I’m working on it though. Are you ready for winter?

      • I am all ready! And it has abruptly warmed up a few degrees too 🙂

Books and gardens are among my favourite things too – but I have to add in my art supplies to be fully satisfied 🙂

      • I’m embarrassed about how much I have with all the minimalist working so hard out there. I haven’t even brought most of it out of the garage yet. Still hoping for a place of my own other that this tiny apartment. My messes get monumental. My sister said she wouldn’t live with me because I have so much clutter. She has no hobbies and is the minimalist breathing down my neck. We are like night and day. :)) Sounds to me like you have a very well balance life too. 🙂

  2. Starting from the bottom, up, I love your embroidered piece. Books and gardens and colorful stitching, all beautiful. I would make it into a pillow and keep it on my favorite chair or couch. That way you can enjoy the tactile qualities.

I love the pink flower snow. I’ve come across something similar a few times over the years, usually when the rain knocks all the cherry blossoms down at once. It’s breathtaking.

Congratulations on finishing the quilt top. You must feel accomplished.
I hope you’re still seeing improvements from your physical therapy.

    • Thanks Alys. I was thinking of you while I stitched it and you sweet lending library on the corner and the wonderful garden. The only thing the design didn’t have was a kitty. Had some trouble with the machine so there was some puckering and it drives me crazy. I’ll do it again though. Not sure when I’ll get the quilt together. Hopefully soon. Physical therapy is kind of doing what I already do to stretch myself. I’ve been doing it unconsciously all along but they can keep track of improvement. It is getting better. I appreciate the thoughts. Hugs to you and all the kitties.

      • Awww, that is so nice to hear.

I’m sorry you had machine trouble leading to the puckering. Can you work any magic with a steam iron?

It’s nice to hear that your PT mirrors what you’ve been doing on your own. That must be validating. Hurray for improvements!

Hugs back at you. (Head bumps from the kitties). =^..^=

  3. Marlene, I was on a walk recently and came across the pink snow, as well. I snapped a few pictures and had planned on writing about it as well…my note to self was: “It was like a shower of pink snow.” We’ll see if it comes to fruition. See you Wednesday!

    • Thanks for reading Missy. I’m certain your pink snow will have and entirely different spin on it. Isn’t it fun that we all see and do things so differently? I’ve never seen that many blossoms on the ground at once. So beautiful.

  4. No pink snow here. Only a few of the trees are even starting to bud here so it’s going to be awhile. I did notice a few more bulbs had finally opened around town today though. I love the quote on your embroidery. A garden and library, really is there anything else we need. 🙂

    • Thanks Lois. I agree. Sure hope you see more spring soon. We’re going into summer shortly. Have a feeling it’s going to be a long hot one.

      • I like the sunshine but anything over 80 sends me into heat exhaustion. No can do. When it gets hot, I have to stay wet since I don’t perspire. I’ll step in the shower, get wet, dress over wet and go awhile till I have to step in the shower again. I’ve tried the spray bottles and they work a bit, At least here, it usually cools enough most nights that I can sleep. Heat stroke made a mess of my system. But I love the sun. “) So glad you do though. Hate to see the heat go to waste.

      • Marlene, I can’t even imagine suffering like you do in the heat. We need to split our problems and come up with a compromise between our systems. I go into hypothermia if it’s below 70 but can tolerate almost all heat. The only time I have problems is when it goes above 115 like it does in Phoenix.

      • Yes Lois, I wish we could compromise our heating and cooling systems. I guess that’s why God made so many different parts of the country. I live in Phoenix for almost a year after 8 in Memphis. It was an honest relief and I loved it there. I has changed. We lived in the mountains 4 hours NE of there for 12. Pretty but. more snow than I could handle. Loved the weather otherwise. Never too hot. Each year the snow got deeper and my husband didn’t do any of the work. When I got sick, I quit. I don’t shovel the rain.

      • I would have to say my favorite place was Albuquerque NM. The weather was perfect I had the mountains and the greenery I love. The only downside was I was in the city and wish I could have lived a bit outside of town.

How lovely! What a treat to tread a pink-petaled path to PT (couldn’t resist!). Your projects are lovely as well.
Are you seeing any improvements as a result of your Physical Therapy? I know mine changed my life.

    • Thanks for reading Alicia. Cute play on words. 🙂 Improvement is a matter of perspective. I think it’s going to take as much time with or without. Push my brain anyway to relearn everything but this way someone else gets to measure the progress. It’s hard to recognize vestibular integration. it all shows in how long or in what direction I lose my balance. It is getting better.

  6. I can’t even imagine how often you have to change the thread with your gorgeous embroideries. You must have a LOT of thread hey? I sure hope I can set up a proper sewing desk when we move. Currently, It’s on top of two vintage suitcases and I sit on the floor and work the foot with a hand…so many things wrong with that. LOL. I immediately thought of Alys when I read the quote. Throw in some coffee and I’d be good to go.

Now that pink ‘snow’ is just to pretty for words, don’t I just wish snow WAS pink. Winter would be so much more ‘do-able’. Too bad the rain and wind knocked of all the blooms because I’m sure the tree’s were a pretty view too, but this is a stunning consolation.

I’m relieved to hear you’re out walking to your physical therapy session. That seems to be progress in itself. Whenever I get out for a walk, I always feel a little lighter in spirit and refreshed, don’t you? It’s the best way to blow the cobwebs out of the brain. I went to pickup a parcel at the post office yesterday and it was super windy. I caught my reflection in the window on the way in and holy snap, my hair looked like it was done by Edward Scissorhands, I had to LOL. “oh hello, I’m a maniac and you have some mail for me”…They probably wanted to laugh too. It’s rather liberating being middle-aged and not caring what your hair looks like anymore.

Your neighbourhood ducks reminded me of the lake. They’re my favourite lake bird. Maybe because they mate for life. Some mornings on the way to work, I’d see a couple just walking down the road together. Waddle, waddle. So cute. I would always go super slow, then they’d finally notice me and walk into the ditch. I’d wave on the way by, LOL Like they knew me 😀

I worked tonight and got a late start on posts, but glad I got to see what you’re up too Marlenie-beanie. ta ta for now. xoxoK

    • I so enjoy it when you stop by. it’s like adding sunshine to my day. We have big rain by the way. I walk a lot, just with the cane for balance. I tried to park in the structure and found myself getting nauseous. So it’s outside parking for me till this is gone. I’m thinking…soon. 🙂 I thought of Alys too when I made it. Too bad they didn’t squeeze some coffee in there. I’m with you on that one. It is a lot of changing thread. But worth it. My ex-daughter-in-law sews on the floor and prefers it. My back couldn’t take that and she doesn’t do a lot of sewing so it doesn’t matter to her. Me, I’ve gotta have it all set up nice or I couldn’t do it. Just wait till you get to be my age. You care even less what you look like when you pass that window. Ha Ha. Scary old lady me! Life short . I’m going to miss those ducks a lot if I get to move. There are here because of the Estuary around the complex. Oregon makes the developers protect the natural habitat. Yay! I’m hoping I’ll have really good news soon. Shhh. 🙂
