Looking for answers to life's questions

I am still in the waiting game with the bank. They want a bank statement that won’t be generated till June 7 and not available till June 10. The want it June 3. I see why so many people choose to rent. I will if I must but the rents here just went up another $40 a month. Wow! Supply and demand. If everyone trying to buy a home, even one like I’m trying to buy has this much aggravation, I understand the rental demand.

On that note, I’ll tell you about a few others that needed a bit of help to find a home. My daughter and I were coming back from our Sunday errands and saw little kittens poking their sweet faces out from under the apartment building across from me. The neighbor who lives there is not fond of cats, especially feral cats. I just can’t seem to mind my own business. So I brought down a little tin of food and a small, soft cat kennel. Those frisky little guys are like stealth jets. Lunging for food, then retreating into the hole. I finally managed to snag one and pop it into the kennel for a trip to my guest bath. My daughter took one look at (her) and gifted her the name Smudge.

Any question as to why she got her name? She also ran the show.

It took another day to collect two more and while I was sitting on my neighbor’s porch trying to catch the last two, I was being observed by a gentleman in his car. He had apparently been keeping track and feeding the mother cat. He and his wife were going to attempt to get her spayed if they could corral momma. That was one big cat and I was not going to mess with her. I know almost nothing about them other than I wanted to find them homes.

Smudge got her share first, then the other 2 ate. I think that's why Smudge was the biggest.

As it turned out, the gentleman and his wife came to my place and decided to call Smudge their own. They took her to their vet while I took the other two to mine. Ironic that I have a vet and own no animals. I thought about keeping one or two but I am surrounded by packed boxes with little room to walk, much less keep track of wily kittens. One wrong move and they would be gone again. On top of that, the vet determined they needed some extensive treatments which I didn’t have the resources or energy to do. Smudge had the same problems but her family were in a better position to take care of that. The vet fosters kittens so she took them in for treatment and would then place them in good homes. I was sad and happy at the same time.

Cinder and Puff (of smoke) outside the hard kennel. Door was open but they felt safe in there.

It had to be about what was best for the kittens, not what would entertain me. I won’t have the time to devote for a while so it’s best for me to wait and see. In the meantime, I’ll do my best to keep wrangling strays when they cross my path.

Puff was larger than Cinder. At 7 weeks old, they are just too tiny

Is there any solution to the abandonment of unwanted pets that leaves them to fend for themselves? If we can’t make some people responsible for the children they’ve brought into the world, how can we persuade them to be responsible for the animals they leave behind? I’m trying hard not to rant here, but I really want to.

From my heart to yours,
Marlene Herself

Rant away! No doubt you’ve seen my blog post, http://spashionista.com/index/2014/5/11/one-dog-at-a-time, about the dog my husband and I helped rescue just last month. She had been living in the wild for over a year, and she had eight pups three days after we finally got her in from the wilderness. Poor girl has some illnesses that will require treatment after she weans her pups. I’ve set up a GiveForward fund to help pay her and the puppies’vet bills.
You are SO wonderful to have intervened on behalf of these kittens! You did the right thing with no other thought than what would ultimately be best for them. I thank you for being the kind of person that cares enough to act.

    • Thank you Alicia. I do what little I can with my resources and energy level. I’m hoping the other neighbor got the other 2 kittens. We can’t fix it all but we can do a tiny bit in front of us. You can see why I haven’t been to your place this week. Working on it tonight though. Cat-ching up.:)

  3. We can only do what we can do Marlene. There will always be unthinking and uncaring people in this world. If we can help a small amount of animals, then we have done good. Big hugs my friend!

  4. I’m sorry you are going through such a headache in the purchasing of a home, I was hoping today would be the day you announced you were the proud owner of a home. Soon, soon.

You amaze me with all you do. Those kittens are so fortunate you noticed them. They are all adorable you had me sitting here wishing I could take one. My neighbor saved a kitten recently that was in poor health. She’s so affectionate and I haven’t yet had an allergic reaction to her that I may break down and adopt her myself. Sigh I am such a pushover.

    • I know what you mean Lois. They are so cute but need so much time and energy especially now. I guess it wasn’t meant to be for the moment. We all do our little bit to make the world better. We will soon get the job done, I hope.Hugs, M

  5. Marlene, you have the kindest heart. Thank you for rescuing those kittens from what would surely have been a terrible fate on the streets. I’m so glad you were able to catch them early. I’m delighted to hear that one has already been adopted, and please to hear too of a vet that fosters kitties. That’s wonderful.

They are so cute. I love the names you and your daughter came up with. Smudge is my favorite. I hope they can trap and spay mama kitty too.

I don’t know the answers to the cat overpopulation, except to educate, educate, educate. It’s cruel to abandon an animal on the street. We have 3 (or 4 if you count Mouse) cats: two were strays, one came from the Humane Society and the other has a ‘home’ but not a loving one.

As for the bank, honest to goodness they know how to make life difficult. Best of luck on the journey. We’re all pulling for you.

    • Thank you Alys. I can only do what I can. They had ringworm and I know nothing about it except I had to bleach everything including the carpet. They were adorable and will get good homes. I trust that vet. I have a file now.:) I expect the bank has to be aggravating to make sure I’m ready for this undertaking. I never want to do it again though. I really wanted to keep the kittens but obviously, it just wasn’t meant to be. I’m the rescuer, not the keeper. Seems my lot in life.

      • Now now. You will be a keeper of kitties when the time is right. I understand the temptation all too well wanting to take in all the lonely strays. I predict another kitty in your life soon, a keeper for sure.

        Darn those banks.

      • Thanks Alys, I’d rather the banks be more careful about who they loan to rather than loan to people that end up in default. They are just making sure I really want this. I’m trying to keep good humor and relaxed about it. Hugs to you and chin scratches to the kitties.

      • I agree with that sentiment. They’re greed lead to all the mortgage defaults among other things. They should have applied prudent lending practices from the start.

Thanks for the hugs. The kitties thank you too.

        Hugs to you as well.

  6. Alys has said all I wanted to say perfectly Marlene! To care enough to want to save a life, reveals a huge heart. To act and save a life is such a great deed – and reveals a mighty individual! So many would say, “Isn’t it sad, isn’t it heart-breaking, isn’t it cruel!” Not many actually set about the task of trying to make it right!

The time will come – first you must trust that all is well in your housing situation – and it will be. Picture yourself living there in perfect harmony with the perfect pet and let go of all the other stuff – it will all work itself out if you just get out of the way and trust that all is well in your world.

    • Thank you Pauline. I’m more relaxed about this than I ever expected to be. They toss blocks at me and I just move them out of the way. I feel that it will happen, they just want to ensure I work hard for it. I’ve never been late or missed a payment on anything so there is no reason for it not to happen. As for pets, I’m thinking my job will continue to be rescuing and fostering till I find homes for the little critters. Been doing it a long while now. Hmmm, Maybe next week I’ll post pics of another rescue I did a few years ago. Now that was fun. First I must find the photos. 🙂 Thanks for reading. Hugs, M

  7. Awwwwww, be still my beating heart ❤ ❤ Mercy those are the tiniest little sweethearts. I'm so happy you were able to collect them and help, you're a doll. I bet it was a bit of a show over there. Maybe even a good workout,ha. Cinder, Puff and Smudge are fun and perfect names for these widdle kitties too. Funny, our old neighbours who had three adorable girls under 10 also had a kitty named Smudge. LOL, now I get it. Their Smudge was huge and often sat in my window box looking in,
Lucky little Smudge to have found a home too and I'm sure the others will be snapped up quickly as soon as they are healthy.

The fact that people would be so heartless to leave behind a pet when they move is like throwing dynamite into my heart. We've even had a situation here with horses believe it or not. I would like to punish those people by making them sleep on the street with no food as a punishment. I think that's what's required really. The ol' eye-4-an-eye comes to mind. At the same time, these kind of people don't learn anything until you hit them in the pocket book. Bigger fines and public humiliation is my Rx for these people who dare be so inhumane to helpless creatures. I also think Animal Care Providers and rescues good do well by visiting Elementary School. Built an attitude of good animal welfare from very young and continue throughout their educational lives. By the time they're grown ups, they will have learned a healthy respect for animals and know how expensive it is and a PRIVLAGE to include one in your life. Educators have been doing this with smoking for decades and it's made a big difference.

I wish right? I'd have more luck waving a magic wand and making all of them like you! Caring, loving and selfless xoxoxoox I hope your bank gets their act together soon. I've never heard of printing bank statements only one day a month and making people wait. That seems ludicrous. Everything is so accessible these days. I hope with all my heart it all works out for you Marlene. Love and Hugs K

    • Oh thank you so much for finishing the rant I wanted to do! Going into the schools is a great tool and I wish they would do that. I grew up not knowing anything about animals because we didn’t have them, My first was when my daughter was 4. My Blossom was a love and still in my heart. We will never make the world perfect but we can sure keep trying. As for the bank, well I printed out what was current on my computer but it wasn’t the end of month statement they want. They will take what they get because we are supposed to close before that. Hopefully, Friday. Your good thoughts are keeping it going and me too. Have you closed on yours and started the move yet? It’s a lot of work.

      • WAIT! You also had a pet named Blossom Marlene? I don’t think I knew that……did I? Well that’s a fun little tidbit 😀
We see our lawyer tomorrow afternoon and meet up the home owner on Friday Morning June 6th for the keys. I’ve done a fair amount of packing. Need to do the kitchen and closets now. I’ve been busy trying to arrange furniture and rugs. We couldn’t store everything and gave away or sold a number of things when we last moved. Starting fresh will be a joy after life influx for two years. So we will both be getting new home owners at about the same time Marlene! How fun! xoK
