Looking for answers to life's questions

I have so much to tell you all about that I almost don’t know where to start. This summer has been so full I can barely catch my breath, so I’m going with what touches my heart the most and save the rest for a later post. This is my way of saying thank you for all the thoughtfulness in the world.

What I must admit here, is that I’m having a love affair with the postal service. I know, I know; they have a very bad reputation. Everyone complains on the speed of their delivery or the condition of the mail when it finally arrives. Me, I’m just very happy to get mail. It’s not often that I do but when I do, oh boy, it’s a dozy of a delivery.

I don’t get bills since mine are all paid automatically. I only get one tiny little magazine that I have subscribed to for over 20 years. Letters are few and far between, like at Christmas. But earlier this spring I received these handmade items from Fran and Steve in Tasmania via Serendipity Farms. Steve made them from their native wood.

So why the love affair? I have received in the last short while so much wonderful mail that I could almost kiss my mail carrier, Mo. (short for Maureen). I’m not sure she would appreciate the kiss. She’d rather have cookies or banana bread but it’s too hot to bake. I just received this wonderful hand-made thank you card.

A wonderful hand crafted thank you. So much thought went into it.

Most of my mail has had an aqua tinge to it. It’s now also becoming a favorite color of mine. Can you guess who sent all this wonderful mail?

Aqua and pink are the signature colors here.

Aqua and pink are the signature colors here.

The first package arrived a several weeks ago. There was an Easter bunny in there and chocolate. My son saw the chocolate and decided I needed help with my diet. The rest was pure fun.

The second was supposed to be just a check for the aqua sewing machine I sold and mailed to this sweet soul to add to her collection. Well the check was in a fair sized box that left me quite in a titter. Here is what was in the box with the check.

When I mailed the machine, I decided to mail it from Victoria while I was there to see if postage would be less than from Oregon. Not only was it one third the cost, I had an old address on there and the lovely Canadian postal system bothered to find her and send it on. After a year, my post office can’t find me and I only moved 3 miles but I’m not giving them a bad time because they brought me such lovely things.

From someone special

I love snail mail and my postal workers. Without them I wouldn’t have all of these delights. I just wish international mail were not so expensive and difficult. Now to get my thank you card done.

Another coaster with pink typewriter.

Can you imagine life without the ability to send wonderful things to each other?

From my heart to yours,
Marlene Herself

  1. I can’t think of any one who deserves more postal love than you Marlene – I enjoyed seeing all your lovely gifts! I have one of Steve’s spoons – a super dooper one – but only one – yours are really lovely! PS I think you should have ‘Fran’ there, not ‘Wendy’. Fran is narf77 xoxo You can delete this bit of my comment 🙂

    • Thanks Pauline. I’ll change it now. I was feeling a bit frazzled in trying to figure that out yesterday. I appreciate the help. It’s so hard when there is rarely a name floating out there. I have so many things I want to get made and sent and nothing seems to be coming together for me right now. I guess it will all happen in it’s own time. I so appreciate your sweet words. You are another one who deserves all good things. Maybe what ever is going on out there in universe will take a turn soon and make things work better.

      • Only 6 months behind. I feel like I need another lifetime to get caught up. Trying to figure out how to relieve some of the anxiety of too much on my plate. My son wanted me to take painting classes with him. I just looked at him like he’d lost his mind. I have too many hobbies as it is. Buddha said expectations are the cause of suffering. Boy am I suffering. 🙂

Long may lovely objects keep arriving through the mail.

    • I love that. Your postie. Ours is Mo and she has been here even longer but the mail goes into a box way up at the end of the street and we have to go get it. I do run into her on occasion. I try to spoil her for all her hard work. Thanks for stopping by.

    • You are correct about that instant connection. Most of my letter writing is done on the computer. Unfortunately, so many of my friends are afraid of it or use it very little. It’s amazing how many don’t do any computer writing. You can send written words and have packages delivered by ordering though the internet, but it’s the mail truck, UPS or Fed X that delivers the fun stuff. I’m on my computer a lot and that’s how I’ve made all these wonderful connections. Without it, it would be quite a different story here. Thanks for stopping by.

    • Thanks, E. I do too but tend to get more than I give. I’m just a little slower these days. Boomdee has a talent for this like few others. I send things packed in old grocery bags. She packs everything in aqua tissue and flowers. It’s all just too pretty to use. Alys at Garden Nirvana holds a close second. They can give lessons on being generous. I bet your friends love getting your packages too.

Thank you for your kind words. You make me smile.

What a smart idea mailing your package from Victoria. You saved a bundle, and Canada Post did their part getting it to the correct address. Kudos!

Boomdee is a gift to us all as well, isn’t she? You are a gift, too. I marvel at times that the very people we’ve met through the internet are the ones keeping the postal service alive. It’s so darn fun! Hugs, dear one.

    • You are also a gift to me. It really isn’t what she sent but how it’s sent. You do the same thing. There is so much care in every little detail. I have not quite reached that level. I’m lucky to get things into the mail. No pretty about it. it is fun sending things and I have had plans in the works but so many things just seem to get in the way. Ah well. Time will tell.

      • Sending you big hugs, Marlene. I saw you mention a touch of fatigue in a comment somewhere today. I hope you’re feeling more like yourself.

I think Boomdee is the master at packaging a gift and making every detail just so. But I have to say that anyone who puts time into putting pen to paper or sending an unexpected gift of a darling dress form, or an embroidered card is tops in my book. It’s the thought that counts. When something arrives on your doorstep, it says “I’ve been thinking of you and I took the time to let you know.” That is the truest gift. xox

      • I think of you all a lot. Pauline, Boomdee and you. Now I see that Julia and I have a great deal in common as well. I so wish I could have joined you all but still have a ways to go. I am feeling better. Had to rest more than I like and working hard at getting weight off. That’s the biggest culprit as well as stress. Letting stress go and taking care of me…finally. It’s too hot to do anything else. 100 here today. 😦 Glad you liked the mannequin apron.

        Like

      • 100 degrees is inhumane! We hit 88 today, and had the rarest of rare bit of rain (for about five minutes). Just enough to increase the humidity, but exciting nonetheless. Stress is brutal, and from what I’ve read can also contribute to our weight loss challenges. It increases cortisol. I’m trying to drink lots and lots of water and finally managed to break my diet Pepsi cycle (again). That helps me drink more water as well as herbal tea, both good for stress and weight loss.

I’m glad you are chipping away at losing weight. Me too. I joined a group and did a five to seven day cleanse last week, and though challenging, it really has eliminated the sugar cravings. That is the hardest thing for me. I hope to keep up these better habits. Best of luck on the journey, Marlene. We will meet one day, I’m sure of it.

      • I know we will meet one day…soon! I’m letting go of the stress. Writing my way through things. I know all about cortisol. Funny thing, they say heavy people know more about what it takes to get thin than anyone but we have the hardest time doing it. I haven’t been able to drink soda for 15 years. It leaches calcium from the bones and I have osteoporosis already. Makes my legs cramp in the most painful way with even a sip. Easy not to drink it. I drink almost a gallon of water a day. After on cuppa, It’s water all day unless we go out. Mostly water with lemon and on occasion, iced tea. Tea is a diuretic too like coffee. I think if I get back to where I need to be, I’ll be able to do so much more. I’m not craving sugar anymore like I was but it wouldn’t be a long drop off that wagon. 😦
Good to hear you had a wet cloud go by.:) We have 89 today. It’s cooling down for a few days. Bark dust comes tomorrow for spreading in the back. Then we can build planter boxes. I’ll have them ready for next spring. A little at a time. Have a wonderful week,

      • I believe it! I know all the things I should do and also know when I’ve slipped up. I’m not missing the soda, and just had some chocolate today for the first time in two weeks. It was just okay, so that was something to pay attention to as well.

The weight comes off soooo slowly these days. With my foot injury I’ve had to give up hiking and walking and with the drought I have very little to do in the garden. I started seeing a physical therapist so hope that helps. In the meantime I’m trying to eat more mindfully and relieved to be off the soda. Good to know about the calcium leeching too.

        Liked by 1 person

      • So happy to hear about the soda!!! :))) I get crazy when I see children drinking soda when they are trying to build bones. I did not know about your foot injury. What happened to it? I’ve been doing pretty good till today. Tomorrow will be better. I’m tired of dieting. Been doing it since I was 14 on an off. But can’t give up. So back to square one, I work hard outside but then there is all the sitting at the computer . 🙂 I’ll be back at the gym soon. 🙂 I want to start my Qi Gong again. That worked so well. Hope physical therapy helps.

      • Dieting is tiresome. Thinking about what you’re going to eat (or what you shouldn’t eat, or feeling guilty because you did eat it), it all takes energy. The hardest thing I’ve done over the years is try to make a permanent change in my eating habits. I was lucky to be slim most of my adult life. I didn’t put on weight till my mid forties. Now I feel like I’ve been trying to lose the same twenty pounds for a decade. I followed a dietary cleans last week, lost 4.5 pounds, the regained most of it the following week. I understand your discouragement, Marlene, I really do.

I took Tai Chi once upon a time and loved it. I believe it is similar to Qi Gong. Enjoy.

I’m always a bit uncomfortable about being the receiver of gifts. More comfortable being the giver. But I’m learning to say a gracious thank you and enjoy. Boomdee is so creative that there is no way I could not be any thing but tickle aqua about all that. She is a kind, generous and profoundly creative person with a heart of gold. I’m meeting so many wonderful people online. Keep tapping away. You’ll get it done. Hugs. M

That’s the part I love. I treasure each and everything anyone sends to me. Real mail is just grand when it’s sent with so much care. There was a lot of heart in the wooden utensils too. 14. Oh my Marlene! What a wonderful collection of cards, letters and gifts you have received. That is all quite marvelous! There is nothing quite like receiving something in the mail isn’t it? I also think that those who think snail mail is a thing of the past are just completely missing out. I had to laugh one day when I was searching for an address book and the girl in the store looked at me astonished when I explained how I couldn’t find one. She could not imagine what on earth I would need that for reminding me that everything I need is in my phone or my computer! Sigh! I tried to explain that electronics can die off and did she indeed even have actual address is in her electronics in the first place? Well no she said. “If I need an address I just call and ask.” Huh?? She just didn’t get it.

    • OH goodness, then she has never experienced the delight of owning an address book! Spotting old addresses that have been crossed out, seeing how families grew, and shrunk (because you wrote the extra names in the margins). And what about the times when you flipped through and noticed someone you hadn’t heard from in a year, and realized it was time to check on them? And how about the system of putting a dot by each name I sent a Christmas card to, so I remember? Different coloured dot for each year. ha ha. I can’t imagine not having an address book. 🙂

Hooray for snail mail and all your wonderful cards and goodies 🙂 When I lived in California, for the first 10 years or so, we didn’t have internet or email and I lived for my letters from home, especially from my mum, written on pale blue airletters. I love to receive snail mail and my daughter, as an aspie, does all her shopping online so we get packages most days. Our poor postman always looks rather perplexed when he comes to our door! Thrilled for you my friend, such a joy and a delight…just like you 😉

I can definitely feel your joy in this post, and your deep appreciation of the postal services in Canada and the US. I just heard the funniest story on BBC about a letter that got delivered, addressed to “Your man Henderson, that boy with the glasses who is doing a PhD up here at Queen’s in Belfast. Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland.” Did I tell you that one of the books I have begun to write (in my free time, of course) is about a woman who works at a tiny rural post office? I’ll have to finish it soon, before the readers forget what a post office is.
