Tech Support

Where in the world would we be without good tech Support in this high tech age? My heart goes out to those who don’t have it available to them. I am blessed to have both of my children turn out a little techy. They got it from their grandma, my mother. My youngest brother was tech support for her. I don’t remember exactly when she got her first computer but I’m sure it was well before I finally got one. Mom took classes at the adult school and the senior center to stay current with technology. I have done the same to learn new programs and how to finesse them. Mom also liked to get the newest updated technology as often as possible.

Would you guess she was a techno geek?

Since my post a couple of weeks ago, my damaged laptop arrived at my son’s. He is working to resurrect it with a new hard drive. He sent a laptop that was in the back of a closet for me to use while I waited for the repair. It worked for slightly more than an hour before doing a tab dance without music. If I could show you the gyrations it performed all on it’s own, you would probably give it a 10. It took all I had to click the cursor quickly enough to shut it down as the cursor was having a party all it’s own. Trying to work with my tablet was not an easy task. I’ve been advised to purchase an external wireless keyboard for it and may soon. In the meantime,  Tech Support (my son) had me log on to the laptop he sent and quickly before it started dancing again, download a remote operating program. Once I had that accomplished, he quickly signed on and took control. Within minutes the laptop was working perfectly. A few adjustments later, I’m pretty much back in business.

Tech support at work. There are more computers in the office. Gracie’s waiting to play.

Why has it taken me so long to get back to you? You know the rules don’t you? Everything comes in threes! I had an old friend come to visit. It’s been a year and a half since our last visit when I went to see her and right after leaving her little dog pulled her over causing  head and body injuries that left her in rehab for several months. I made only one plan for our time together and figured we’d wing it from there.  All went well through lunch and dinner time until after we put on our cozies for bed. An infection causing extreme pain surfaced quickly and I was looking for an emergency room at 10 pm. I am again grateful for our current technology as without GPS we might still be trying to find it. I don’t drive at night due to vision limitations but somehow, we arrived safely and I guarantee I’m not sure I could find it now.

My friend finally got well enough with medication and much sleep to make it to Fabric Depot. As the quilter who got me started down this addictive path, an acre of fabric and notions is like visiting the chocolate shop. They have electric scooters for those who can’t make it on foot. I heard a lot of exclamatory comments as she motored through.

fabric depot

Just the beginning of the fun

The next morning there was a phone call at 6 am. Family had been trying to reach her but we have poor cell reception here. There was a family tragedy. After getting grounded enough to take care of business, she changed her flight and headed back to deal with all that is laying ahead. Every time I think my life is harder than it needs to be, I look around and someone else is having a tougher time. This was one problem Tech Support couldn’t fix but he could give me moral support as I gave some to my friend.  Life is strange and challenging.

How are you fixed for tech support?

From my heart to yours,

Marlene Herself

  1. The spouse is the resident hardware tech support, I have learned to resolve quite a few software issues and when all else fails and neither of us can get things working we call the middle son – he does tech support for a living and, bless his heart, he has always come through for us. Take care of your self. All the best.

    • Thanks so much for stopping by and I am delighted that you have residential tech support as well as off site. My son has infinite patience with me and the remote program means he can fix it without having to explain it to me long distance. It’s very impressive. Have a wonderfilled weekend.

  2. Goodness, there has been a lot going on at your place Marlene. I do hope your friend’s health improves and they are all held closely as they cope with their family tragedy. And I hope your life settles down a bit and your new laptop does as it is supposed to. Thank goodness you have Tech Support – even though now far away he is proving very effective! So clever these techie folk!!

I don’t have in house tech support – though YD is pretty handy and then has friends who know their ways round computers who can be called on if things go badly awry. I live with the fact that technology needs updating from time to time and try to include that in long term budgeting plans. (Note the use of the word ‘try’ 🙂 ) It gets a bit crazy doesn’t it – remember when phones were chained to the wall and mail was all by snail? Now I dread to think how we will all cope when the www goes down!

    • When his ex-wife gets her computer back that she put in the back of the closet because it frustrated her, she will be impressed at how well it works now. She will get hers when I get my repaired laptop back. He does most of her tech work too but had no idea that the one he sent had those kinds of bugs in it. Remote operating programs make it easy to repair some things long distance. Young people around can be very helpful in a pinch. Good thing YD has good friends to help. What will we do if the WWW goes down? We probably will go with it. It would be catastrophic. I’ve got to look for new posts from you. Not getting notifications still. 😦 I still use snail mail and working on sending you some shortly now that the world is slowing down. Once the eclipse passes through, I think things will get less chaotic. Just waiting for #45 to resign now. 🙂 Giant hugs. M

    • My techy son seems to have infinite patience like your Rob must have. Even with my sister! But it’s so much easier when he can use the remote operating program. It’s like he’s sitting in my chair with me fixing things from hundreds of miles away. Wish he could help WP figure out why I’m not getting notifications again. ;( They can’t seem to get it worked out. Have a wonderfilled weekend.

I can do a lot on my own but know when to call in the big tech guns for help. 😉 Thanks for stopping by. Have a wonderfilled weekend.

  6. What a rough time you and your friends have been having. My commiserations… It sounds as if Tech Support has things more or less under control. I don’t have any: I’m on a Mac, and the Husband is on a PC, and never the twain shall meet. I’ve been a Mac girl all my life, ever since the first personal version came out, and I’ll never change. But of course it means I can’t help him and he can’t help me. Luckily none of my Macs have ever given me any serious trouble (touch wood!).

    • I’ve heard so many good things about the Mac’s, Kate but they are always out of my price range and learning curve. 🙂 I have enough to learn with the quilting and sewing. I need things simple somewhere. 🙂 Getting old and a bit lazy. 🙂 Glad your Mac doesn’t cause you anguish. My PC would have been fine had the vacuum not fallen on it while the hard drive was spinning. 😦 Have a great weekend.

I’m just glad she was with me when it happened. I’m not totally clueless with tech stuff but I do know when to bring in the big guns. It’s like knowing what you can treat yourself and when to call in the specialist. 🙂 I am so grateful for the remote operating program so he can fix my computer in one state while sitting on his sofa in another. I have less guilt in asking when I know he can stay comfy at home and do the work. 🙂 There has been so much rattling around in my head so maybe I can get it all down here now. Have a wonderfilled weekend, Jill.

  8. Good post! My older son is our go-to tech guy. My dad was apart of the earliest computers-this big fridge sized machines. My hubby and Infollow the cardinal tech rule- turn it off and turn it back on. (Sometimes I do this several times just to show it who’s boss!)

  9. It’s always good to know where to turn when help is needed. You were there for your friend, which meant a great deal to her I’m sure. Isn’t it funny how we have become very dependent on technology. What did we do when computers and smartphones didn’t exist 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    • I was glad she was here when it happened. It gave her time to regroup before going home to deal with things. I hate being dependent on anything but this opens my world a great deal. I was almost a shut in when I started blogging. I was too ill to do anything else so this was my window to the world. Now I get out a bit more but my virtual friends here are really closer than the physical friends I made here. Without the computers and the smartphone with GPS, my world would have been very small. Thanks for stopping by, Deb. Have a wonderfilled weekend. Keeping good thoughts for you.

  10. Sorry, your friend is having such a hard time, Marlene. And I’m glad you made it to get help when infection set in. It’s amazing what we can do when pushed.
As for tech support, I’m it! I’ve been techie ever since I got my first computer way back when. Most of the family used to come to me for help. Now because everyone lives so far away from each other they find others to help. Which is ok with me. 😉
I’m seriously considering getting a Mac next time around as I’ve heard they have less issues. I will do some more research on that.
    Keep well, my friend. ❤

    • You are right, Jackie. When pushed, we can always come up to the task. I managed to get my sister to the emergency room when she was staying with me. Early morning but dark. Fortunately, I knew where I was going. This time I didn’t. TS lives in AZ and I’m in OR but the remote program made it easy for him to see what was on my computer and fix it like he was sitting in my chair. 🙂 It’s fun to watch. I have no doubt that you are the go to person in your family. Your family made you STRONG! Lots of people love their MAC’s. Too pricey for me. I’m more of a pot roast than steak kind of person. I’m trying to catch up here. Not getting any notifications of posts again. So far, they haven’t fixed it. It will all settle down after the eclipse. It has to be in the alignment that all this chaos is happening. Have a good weekend. You’ll be hearing from me soon. You are on my mind daily. Just saying. 🙂

I’ve had my IP provider do remote fixing before when things were beyond me and yeah it’s fun to watch. Usually I can fix my computer problems. When that fails I take it someplace that will tell me what’s wrong and how much to fix it. The last few times it was cheaper to buy a new one then fix it. 😦
Big hugs and stay as strong as you are, Marlene. ❤

    • It helps if it’s someone you trust. My son does the work mostly remotely like he did for me. He never leaves his sofa and works miracles in short order. The remote program has a safety feature built in so he can only log in when I’m online and giving him the new password that pops up with each connection. I have to allow the connection. He does it for several of us older citizens and has infinite patience with even my sister who could try the patience of a saint. 🙂 I’m sure you will find someone soon. If not let me know.

    • Thanks for stopping by, Susanne. The laptop was opening up dozens of tabs and then closing them while I watched. I took a video of it but couldn’t get it downloaded and cropped in time. My son is infinitely patient even with my sister who could make anyone pull out their hair. And doing the work remotely is the way to go. He never has to leave his couch. And he never makes me or anyone else he helps feel bad about asking for help. He does this for several people, including his ex-wife. You have to be logged on with him and can see what he is doing the whole time. He can’t log on without them there ever. That’s the safety feature built in. The things they can do these days is amazing. Have a great weekend.

  13. Marlene, I’m so sorry to hear about your friend and the unplanned trip to the ER. What a stressful time. Then to have to rush home to tragic news. It’s all too much. My heart goes out to her and to you.

We all rely heavily on our computers, don’t we? I would be lost without mine. I once blogged using my phone and a wireless keyboard, not an experience I would soon repeat. Mike is our tech guru. We cross our fingers and toes when he’s out of the country as something invariably comes up. He’s been gone five days of a twelve day trip, and so far so good, knock wood. Life is strange and challenging. Gentle hugs.

I’m am so grateful to have any laptop to work on. Have the wireless keyboard on order. My sister gave me a larger tablet last week which is why I didn’t order one sooner. The smaller one is being passed on to my son. He has slightly better vision. You may need to get a remote repair program. TS does most of the work for me from Arizona or where ever he is. Then Mike can fix things from his computer in any country. 🙂 We are using Team viewer this time. My first husband traveled all the time. It makes us a bit more independent and stronger. Gentle hugs back. Along with a healthy dose of gratitude. The world keeps reminding me how good it is and how much kindness there is if you are willing to see it.

I’m glad you have a larger tablet to work with and a wireless keyboard on order. You’ll love it. By the way, have you seen the old fashioned typewriter keyboards? They’re a hoot. I’ll look for the link. When I saw it i thought of you and Kelly. So much fun. I’ve not heard of Team viewer, but I have used something similar. It’s were another person can take over remote operation of your computer. (cue the Twilight Zone music). There is a lot of kindness in the world. Hateful people aren’t born, they’re made. We need to figure out how to un-make it, probably with healthy doses of compassion, education and exposure to the way the world is, not some narrow view of how someone thinks it should be for their own selfish ends. Hugs, back to you MH.

      • I have not seen the typewriter keyboards as yet. They are probably a hoot. All those years pounding on one and I was the first in line for a word processor. I remember when Smith Corona came out with them. I was in heaven.
Team viewer is just another one of those programs. We have used several over the years.
And you are right about how hateful people get here. I’m ready for a whole lot less of them. My family of origin were very bigoted and not very kind because they were not taught that was important. I think I must have had a download from the Universe at a very young age because it was always a priority for me and to teach it to those around me. I just always looked at my parents like they were out of their minds. Odd, to say the least. It should have been the other way around. I was trying to teach them about kindness and that everyone was the same. One mind at a time and pass it on.

I went to the Fabric Depot when I was in Portland a few years ago. Great store, huge! Are you. getting all ready for the eclipse? So much hype going on about your area. Love the picture of your Mum.. And I learnt myself how to use a computer, still learning in fact.. And pay a premium to have it insured.. As I wouldn’t have a clue.. Until it becomes too out of date.. As technology moves so fast these days.. Which happened with my last one, as Windows moved from the system I was happy using for years to no longer supporting it..
It took a while getting used to Windows 10 which came with my new one..

Good to know you are getting there again, and you are well.. Sending lots of Love your way, and enjoy a relaxing weekend..

  18. Hi, Marlene. I am so glad you were there to help your friend. That can be awfully tough. I have tech support in my two sons (who aren’t around as much as I’d like them to be; nonetheless, they are it) and occasionally The Husband. In hindsight I am amazed how much I have learned through the years on and about the computer as opposed to our kids who grew up with it. I’m completely self-taught..just not the repairs. Your description of your world when you started blogging reminds me of my mother. She’s 88 1/2 and does not have a computer, cell phone, or any other type of device with internet. She has tv, a land line, and lives in Independent Living. I wonder how different her world would be if she had a computer. At any rate, I’m glad you are back. 🙂

I’ve always been somewhat geeky but when I got sick and couldn’t go out in the world, it had to come to me. I have never been so grateful for anything. My mother was my role model. While most of the men around me, other than my son, were reluctant to embrace technology, I was all for it. I love the smart phones and they make my life so much easier. Take away my computer and I just cease to function properly. I know so many older and even younger people who do not want anything to do with technology. I feel a bit sorry for them. I’m so glad you have tech support when you need it. So much we can do on our own but once in awhile we have to call in the experts. 🙂 I’m going to look and see if you have anything new shortly. And I think there´s much appeal to not fit in any box! 😀
Have a lovely and creative day, Marlene!

  23. Oh, my! I’m glad you friend is doing better, first read through and I thought you had the infection that necessitated a run to the ER. I hope her family emergency has resolved itself in the best possible way and all are safe and healthy.

Tech support is so important. Mine is my son as well. He’s quite busy so it may take a few days to make repairs when I run into a problem but it’s nice to have nearby. I probably should have taken classes to learn to operate certain programs, or make my own repairs, but I never did – just relied on the kid. When he was little it boosted his self esteem to be the one to have the job of maintaining our computers so I let him never thinking of the day he would be out on his own.

    • My friend is more fragile than even I expected and I think this trip was too much for her so it’s a good thing it was cut short. The family tragedy was in a sense expected on some level. I’m keeping details of it out of public viewing. I doubt she will be able to make this trip again though.
I’m glad you let your son be the fix it man. I figure we can’t all know all of the same stuff. You have your own area of expertise. It does take time to get things fixed but it’s worth it to have someone you trust doing it. My daughter can handle quite a bit and does at work but my son likes to help his mom so that’s who I call too. 🙂 Hope you are doing well. I am getting no notifications so if you have posted, I haven’t found it in the reader yet. Grrr. WP is having their share of problems too. You can always send an e-mail. 🙂 Hugs.

      • Haven’t posted in about a week. Just too darn busy but had to see how you were doing. I’ve got a post started, hopefully in a couple of days I’ll get it finished. Have an appointment in the morning to get this chair replaced so will be gone all day.

I’m sorry to hear your friend is doing so poorly. Maybe you’ll be able to visit her next time. Give you a break from the heat.

Yes, it’s important to let our kids feel needed and important plus it’s a lot cheaper to have them fix our computers for us. 🙂

      • Visiting my friend would not give me any respite from the heat. She lives in Phoenix. 🙂 She is fragile enough that right now she just needs quiet time alone. I hope her family and friends understand that. Not many do. I bet you do though.
I hope your appointment goes well. Let me know. As for long days, aren’t they all? I have a list a mile long and barely make a dent. I’m taking this whole week to catch up and not go anywhere. I asked my son if I could pay him for fixing my laptop. He put in a request for cookies. 🙂 I can do that. 😉

      • Ah, no Phoenix would not be a break from the heat. I do hope her friends and family understand her need for rest. You are right, I do.

I don’t bother any more to ask my son if I can pay him. We have an agreement, that in the end it all washes out. I watch the kids when needed and take their dog when they go on vacation.

      • Great arrangement with your son. 🙂 Did you get your chair replaced?

      • I think so too. 🙂 Not yet. There’s one more step which we will take care of mid week. My home has to be inspected so a report can be written that basically says that if I get the new chair my home will accommodate it. After that it’s a waiting game to see if the insurance will cover it. If they approve it the first time we apply I should have a new chair in two months. It’s just crazy!

      • Bureaucracy! Too frustrating for words. I’ve been thinking about you all week. Want to send a note soon. Maybe the next two weeks will be kinder and give me more time. It’s on race these days. I’m just waiting patiently for autumn to arrive. Heat wave this week, all week. 😦

      • I’d gladly take some of your heat. Todays high is only going to be 57! Had to have blood drawn yesterday at 7 am and froze in the 43 degrees we had. This is more like the end of October than the first of September but this is what our weather has been like all August too.

You’ve been on my mind too but I’ve been so busy trying to get things done before winter and keeping up with grass that needs cut every three days still from the rain I’m beat when I come inside. We both really need a day to breathe.

      • Lets hope you get a day to breath soon. Only 2 more really hot days, then we are back to what I can handle. Smoke in the air from forest fires down south is keeping me indoors. Walked the mall today after dropping sis and gang off at the airport. Don’t know what I’ll do about the walk tomorrow. Will see. Maybe just walk indoors again. 😦 I haven’t seen 43 degrees in forever. Sorry it’s so hard on you though. Hugs.

      • I would gladly swap homes for a bit if it weren’t for the smoke. There are only a couple of things that still trigger an asthma attack and smoke like that is one of them. The fires aren’t coming too close to your home are they?

      • No worries here yet. Just a few more days and the weather will turn. Bad enough that I go out at 6 a.m. to water then come inside. If I keep it all wet I can hope no idiot sets off a firecracker here. Come on autumn. Of course if we get the rain Huston got, well, I’d be whistling a different tune. There is suffering everywhere. 😦

      • I can’t imagine getting up at 6am for anything! We’re back to rain again tonight but at least I got more work done outside first.

There is suffering everywhere, what bothers me the most is that we could alleviate most of it but don’t.

  24. Hello sweet friend. Things sound about as much of a roller-coaster there as here. I’m sorry to hear your friends news, I hope everything is ok.
I don’t have any tech support. It usually ends up being me for Jim and I’m no expert. He had a meltdown trying to print our concert tix for Bruno Mars. I have no idea what he was up to but it took me all of 2 minutes ??? Honestly, he’s pretty much a grandpa when it comes to Software or Operateng systems.
I’ve been working my butt off all summer at Urban. Through Store closures, re-openings and 5-days-a-week schedules. I actually gave my notice last week. But the new owner didn’t want me to leave and gave me all of September off. Time to rest, rejuvenate and feel like I could enjoy it again. I feel like I missed the whole summer. I miss my friends here too. So that’s where I’m at these days. Burnt out but looking forward to a long rest. Starting after the Long Weekend in September. Sending hugs xoxoxox K

    • September is a great month to have off and good for you for taking a stand for yourself. Very important to take care of #1. I’ve noticed in my own family and friends that it’s the women who usually are more tech savvy. My daughter does a lot for her co-workers and I can noodle out most problems for myself until it gets really complicated. Each of us has our own area of expertise. Glad you are able to handle the meltdown in short order. That could have been catastrophic. ;( Yes, it’s been a roller-coaster summer. I’m ready to see it over. I have so much that I want to post but just haven’t had the chance. Getting there by eliminating other things. There is only so much we can do in one day and I’ve reached my limit too. So happy we will be hearing more from you. Have missed you a lot. Not getting notifications and having to find several on Facebook.:( I sent a note to WP but they sound confused too. Take care of yourself and sending much love and hugs.

  25. Happy Sunday Marlene! I’m the techie in our house unless it gets really complicated. For those moments, Apple has great support. I’m glad we switched from Windows because we rarely have any issues like we had back then. Lucky you have your personal support system!
Tomorrow morning I will make coffee and sit outside on the deck to watch the eclipse. I hope the sky is clear! You definitely should take a quick peak! 😎

    • I’ve been watering and trimming shrubs and roses today and tomorrow morning. I might try for a second to look but I’m quite nervous about it. I get my walk in from 6:15 until 7 then see what I can get done outside. I can manage most things on my computer but replacing the hard drive was not something I wanted to do. Also have a new keyboard for it since the one I broke had a sticking problem too. Windows hasn’t been my problem but most people with a Mac swear by them. I’m not surprised that you are the techy in your house.
I think my mom called my brother just to spend time with him. 🙂

  26. I hate that ‘three’s’ thing, Marlene! Unless, of course, it is GOOD things happening. But we rarely look at the good things that way…hmmmmm.
I know what you mean about looking at someone who has way more going on…I think perhaps it has gotten me through a bunch of icky stuff in the past. There is always someone who is experiencing something far worse. It does not change our struggles…or minimize them in any way. It just gives us the perspective that we can deal with what we have going on right now.
I thought your reaction to my ‘new look’ was so funny…and I had commented on that to someone…that I looked so different someone might not recognize me!! It’s still me…just with a whole lot more focus and confidence!
I’m going to walk around some more of your posts…but I hope that you are doing really well and that the summer has been mostly good!! Much love to you ❤

    • Perspective is everything, Lorrie. You are right, it doesn’t minimize our challenges but if I were asked if I wanted to trade lives with someone, the answer would always be no. It won’t be much of a walk, Lorrie, I have been very busy this summer and not many posts. Hope to change that now. Love and hugs, M

  27. I *am* the tech support in our house.

    • Of course you are. You are a very smart person. I can handle just so much before I call in the big guns. It’s not my area of expertise but you have several of those areas. 🙂 It helps to be a bit younger too. 🙂 Thanks for the visit. I was wondering where you went.

  28. My husband used to be tech support, but now I am sorta handling my own and I’m not sure he likes this! My son is better than both of us of course, so I ask him for help on the sligh, don’t want hubby feeling hurt. Don’t tell anyone this.
    Do you sell quilts?

    Liked by 1 person

    • Don’t have any to sell. I help make small quilts for charity. Never get any done for myself. I have the first two I made and that’s it. I made one for my son and one for a friend and the last husband. They take too long to make them for sale. Even the placemats are not cost effective. So my sister bought a set to give as a gift. I break even on them. had to give them a try. I have a friend who is a prolific quilt maker and so very good at it though. I promise not to tell on you. My son does most of the helping remotely. The last accident was a mail in job. 😦 Thanks for the visit.
