Lucky 13

Growing up in our house was very interesting. My mother, it turned out, was very superstitious. No shoes on the bed for any reason, no black cats (or cats of any color) could cross our path, no walking under ladders and squeezing your thumbs could bring you luck.

At school, we learned more folklore superstitions. Don’t step on a crack, knocking on wood, throwing salt over your shoulder if you spilled any. It was much later that I learned that 13 was an unlucky number and Friday the 13th was to be spent under the covers hiding from bad things happening that day. Breaking a mirror brought 7 years of bad luck, winning the big side of a wishbone brought good luck and the list went on.

Scary statue

I have since worked my way through those superstitions one by one until none really apply anymore. The biggest being the bad luck of Friday the 13th. A number of years ago, on a Friday the 13th, I had a daughter. The last child I planned to have and of course in those days, we didn’t know what we were getting until we go it.

Moss grows on everything.

That Friday the 13th was my lucky day. My daughter was healthy and perfect. Since then, every time I pull the number 13 in a raffle, I win. Everything related to the number 13 brings something extra special.

Daisy umbrella dispels the gloom

Once again, my daughter’s birthday fell on Friday the 13th. This year we covered a lot of ground. First a trip on the MAX to the quilt/sewing show then getting off the MAX   (Metropolitan Area Express or light rail) for a little lunch and a big dessert with shopping in a couple of our favorite places. We had tea at the Japanese Gardens even though it was cold with on and off rain. It rained when we were inside somewhere and stopped while we were outside most of the time. My daughter is teaching herself Japanese for the challenge.

We always have a great time together now that she has grown up into an incredible human. She was an independent thinker (and still is) and a challenging child. She often tells me how grateful she is that I let her live through some of the stuff she pulled. It was her aunt that prepared me for her.

Tea t-shirt always a favorite. “I could say I love you more than tea but that would be silly talk.”

So, when I see a Friday the 13th coming or anything with the number 13, I realize how lucky I am. My perception has changed about so many things in life. I have two wonderful adult children, a sister I’m very close to and many good friends. I am the luckiest person in the world.

Did you know that Friday the 13th comes only once in some years, twice in several others and rarely three times in a year? Our next one is in July of 2018 and the next year that we get three of them is 2026.

How was your Friday the 13th? Are you superstitious?

From my heart to yours,

Marlene Herself

  1. Lovely tribute to your family, Marlene. I’ve never been a superstitious person, so Friday the 13th has always been a normal day for me. The Japanese Garden looks beautiful! Kudos to your daughter for learning the language! Happy Friday!

    • Thank you, Jill. The Japanese Gardens are quite peaceful and one of her favorite places to chill out. Casting aside the old way of being that mom brought along took a bit of work but my daughter helped me learn so much about history. My eclectic and fragmented education left a lot of holes that needed to be plugged. Still learning. 🙂 Thanks for the visit.

  2. Happy Belated Birthday to your daughter and to you as her beloved mother Marlene! I too was raised with superstitions and as a young woman looked into them until I found my way through the mire. The whole unlucky number 13 is one of those set up things that grew wings and flew over hundreds of years – a bit like the black cat thing. 13 is a number aligned with the divine feminine – the lunar cycle per annum is 13 for example, in the old mythologies many of the major goddesses were associated with the number 13. The early church worked to expunge the sacred feminine and turned priestesses into witches, black cats into servants of Satan and the number 13 into the devils number. Later when the church turned on the Knights Templar because they had become too powerful they chose Friday 13th 1307 to eradicate them in a well prepared and expertly executed holocaust. The same day and date was also chosen in the 14th century by the Catholic church to eradicate a sect known as the Cathars who were considered heretic for their beliefs about Christianity and that women could be active church leaders, not just men. The reasons are forgotten and the product lives on as superstition.

All this knowledge is available in carefully researched books and tomes published over many years. I was researching and reading in the 70’s and 80’s and some very interesting works were published back then. Dan Brown of pop culture fame borrowed many of his ideas from those works. The above is a keyhole peek at the history 🙂 So yes, enjoy all the good things that come to you from the number 13, it just shows you stand outside of common beliefs.

    • I will pass on your good wishes tomorrow as the whole gang will be here and celebrate again. I accepted everything as a young person and did not question much until I was on my own. Of course my daughter is a huge history lover and has taught me so much about what you are speaking about here. I loved Dan Brown’s novels and the controversy they caused. My daughter studied the pagan practices in her high school years. I think sometimes, I learned more from her than from school. Thanks for the extra information. I learn more every day and that’s what I’m here to do. I will have a houseful this week. Hope you have a great weekend there. Giant hugs and keep creating. 🙂

  3. What a lovely post, and such a lovely outing with your daughter. You must be very proud of her.
I am not superstitious although my mother and gran would often come out with loose snippets like not walking under ladders and not putting shoes on the table. Load of bollocks, as far as I am concerned, from a contemporary and non-religious point of view. Very very interesting to research the origin of that kind of “belief” (TheContendedCrafter’s response was fascinating!) but I can only entertain those notions on a humorous basis. 13 is an excellent number 🙂

    • I think 13 is an excellent number too. 😉 Pauline, (the contented crafter) is quite knowledgeable on many subjects. I do find myself still reluctant to put shoes up on the bed but then realize I’m listening to the old tapes in my head. I was a very trusting child and now know better. 😉 Thank you for the visit. Have a lovely weekend.

  5. What a lovely description of your day. I’m so unsuperstitious it’s not true. A broken mirror is an inconvenience, black cats are very attractive and Friday 13th is just another day, in my opinion, but I think your version is perfect, with the gift of a daughter to celebrate.

    • When you are quite young, you believe what the grown ups tell you. I’m glad I’ve learned to discern fact from belief. My sweet daughter has taught me well through our lives together. Her perspective is much clearer. I love cats in all colors now and I agree with you about the rest. Have a great weekend and hope the knee is healing nicely. Hugs.

  6. What a nice way to celebrate a birthday, and you made the best of the rain because of course that’s what we get so often in the PNW. Superstition and the idea of luck- good or bad, is an interesting thing, and I think your comment on perception of things that happen has a lot to do with it. What might be great for me could be considered bad for someone else. Maybe superstitions are meant to make us think about what we want to believe and how we want to handle life. We can choose the positive, or go down the negative road.

    • Perception is everything. I like the positive best. I think we have seen our last rain for the year. My daughter used the umbrella to shield her camera and keep it dry. We don’t melt. 🙂 Luck, as they say is preparation meeting opportunity. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend if you are getting one.

We have a japanese garden not so far away, here in Cornwall. It is the most delightful place. Beauty and tranquility combined and the entire place is imbued with peace. Birthday greetings to your lovely daughter 🙂

  10. Happy belated birthday to your daughter! I have always had good luck on Friday the 13th. I’m not very superstitious at all. I do believe in omens though. Strange eh? 😉 I love black cats. I’ve walked under ladders and stepped on so many cracks I lost count. LOL
Hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend. ❤

More than anyone, my daughter has taught me that luck is a state of mind. I’ll pass on the hugs. Today is celebration number two. Tech support is here with his significant other and sis will be here as well. 😉 Have a wonderfilled weekend. Are your ears burning? 😉 Hugs.

  14. Hehe, I’d heard many of those superstitions growing up, but you know, I never really paid them any attention. I walk under ladders, have a beautiful black cat, don’t think I’ve ever thrown salt over my shoulder and we were traveling back home on Friday the 13th – on the road.
But it was sure fun to read about your mom and all her superstitions. And how wonderful to hear about your daughter and from what I’ve read about your sister and son, well, yes, you are so blessed! What a sweet family you have and I laughed when I read about how your sister prepared you for your daughter. Hehe.
All the beautiful photos, for a moment, I thought you might have traveled abroad to Asia somewhere. When we do a Pacific Northwest trip, we’ll have to visit those gardens you mention here. And have some tea. 🙂
Happy birthday to your daughter and here’s to lucky number 13! 🍀🍀🍀🍀

  19. Looks like you both had a beautiful day, and to be honest with you Marlene, I can not remember what I did on Friday the 13th. Like you I was brought up with lots of superstition, Broken Mirrors the same, also seeing Magpie birds, One for sorrow Two for joy etc.. When I was at school I would look intently for my second Magpie, lol..
Now I am just lucky to see a Magpie. 🙂

Loved your pictures, and I can see the rain did not dampen your Day. Lucky indeed to have such a gift given on the 13th.. And what a treasure your daughter must be.. And to have such a close relationship.
I smiled when you said your sister prepared you for your daughters independent ways.. 🙂

My Daughter too, very independent from a young age, that has stood her in good stead as she is not afraid to travel to the other side of the world alone and back on what I call her spiritual quests. 🙂 Amazing how children can be as different as chalk and cheese. 🙂

Wonderful to be catching up with you Marlene..
Have a beautiful week and a belated Happy Birthday to your dear daughter..

    Love Sue ❤ xx

  20. Not ever superstitious much but Friday the 13th did make me a little nervous if it coincided
with a math test back when I was in University. As for now, like you, it’s rather a lucky day for me. Good things seem to happen ‘out of nowhere’.
This is a wonderful post Marlene! Totally enjoyed reading it

    • Superstitions can be a challenge when you are brought up with them. I’m glad to be “mostly” shed of them. 🙂 I’ll pass on the birthday wishes. The dessert was one I indulge in only once or twice a year. Very special and decadent. We always have a great time together and she says I’m more fun than her friends so that makes me extra happy. 25. Lovely photos of your happy day with your daughter. Those old superstitions are hard to remove from our heads. In fact when I thought about it, I realized that there is no number 13 on our street. And that I have not seen a number 13 mailbox on any of my walks. Here’s one explanation. http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/9271508/Can-t-find-a-No-13-Theres-reason
Isn’t the word triskaidekaphobia an interesting word? I can’t even figure out how to say it.

  27. I think your relationship with your daughter is so wonderful. When I feel short changed, I just think about what a wonderful dad I had and thank my lucky stars (is that superstitious?) that we were blessed with him.
So, speaking of stars, I will make a wish if I see one falling. So there’s a bit of that ol’ silliness that sticks with me. I was thinking as I read along how religious ‘men’ of the past centuries really took advantage of people.
Since we have two lovely and loving black kitties, I was going to scoff at the who idea of superstitions like that. But, April 13th, 2001 was a Friday, Jim and I were in Texas, marrying in a garden. The garden was unavailable on the weekend because it was also Easter and big events were planned. So we married on Thursday April 12th, 2001. So I stand corrected. Guilty as charged, LOL. I didn’t want to get married on Friday the 13th. After my first foray into marriage ending in a bad way, I was taking no chances, LOL
Loved all your Garden photo’s Marlene! What a gorgeous way to spend the day ! Belated birthday greetings to your daughter too xox K

    • I am truly no longer superstitious. We make our own luck and what on earth took you to Texas to get married?? You picked a better guy the second time. I thought I did too and got married the second time on July 4, 😦 I knew better but did it anyway because my arm was twisted. 😉 Happy belated Anniversary. I ended up very lucky with my daughter. There were years we were at odds with each other but somehow, it all worked out. Don’t know what I would do without her. Hugs. M

      • Why were we in Texas ? We wanted to skip the whole wedding thing because I don’t think friends have to celebrate with you twice, also, we’d lived together for I think 8 years, LOL. Our friend Mark was living in Dallas at the time and so we called him up. He stood up for Jim and his girlfriend, stood up for me. We limo’d around that day and had a very special evening at the Aldolphus Hotel in Dallas. lt’s quit a special place. It was perfect for us. xo K

  29. I had to giggle, Marlene, as it could have been words out of my own mouth (except that I had a baby on the 13th!!) I had myself convinced of these superstitions, and still there is one that gets me every time. I think it is because in my past, every time a black cat ran in front of my car…something bad happened…EVERY TIME!! So, I have to admit, that I have since found that I, too, like the number 13…and have even found luck in it. But then, I would also have to admit, that not more than a month ago when the black cat crossed my path, I stopped the car…backed up over the line of crossing…and moved forward again!!!
(Oh…and the fact that after a trillion years I remembered that you have to life your feet off the floor while driving over the railroad tracks…and if you forget…then you have to stomp your feet three times!!!) How nice to know that there are antidotes to the curses!! 🙂 🙂

Hope you are well, my friend. Sending lot of good thoughts ❤

But my sweet, colicky daughter mad it worth the stretch. 😉 That moved me forward to abandon all the rest of my superstitions. I had a hard time with black cats too for awhile. Decided to bless everyone I saw and now they are just sweet kitties. No more problems. 😉 Hugs and love.
