Haunted

I’ve been haunted this year. Not by ghosts but by memories. There are seven years of memories that haunt my waking hours and keep sleep at bay.

Haunted

Today is my seventh anniversary with WordPress. My first post was on Halloween night. The haunting started at my son’s home while he and his sister terrorized the neighbor children with frightening sights and sounds.

It’s also the anniversary of my father’s death. But he doesn’t haunt me. Unless I’ve misspelled a word or used it incorrectly.

Frankie ate the candy so he brought flowers for his coffin

What is haunting me is whether I have the capacity to keep blogging in the face of all the new challenges ahead. I have a cemetery of unread posts and another of unfinished posts to write. You know about the well of dead plots, I’m certain.

Halloween here is quiet, deadly quiet in my neighborhood. It’s rainy and not quite cold enough to keep the ghouls away.

Witchy Poo

My lights are on and the snickers are louder than ever before. Calling me to step outside and put my hand in the cauldron with the chance that my hand may never come out of it…empty.

Frightening

The moon is covered so we can’t see the witches fly by it or the ghouls creep up the steps. I have my bowl of popcorn and a host of Halloween hilarity waiting. I’m no good with the horror of this night and will stay hidden until it’s all over, hoping next year will be better and the haunting comes to an end.

Have you got hilarious or horrific plans for your Halloween/Anniversary?

From my heart to yours

  1. Happy Anniversary, Marlene! I do hope you’ll continue your blog as your posts are always entertaining. I might have the perfect gift to keep you organized and writing. 🙂
I enjoyed this Halloween post…the pictures are great. I’ve never been big on Halloween. Even when I was a kid, I stressed about what costume to wear and was always scared by the bigger kids. Enjoy your evening!
P.S. Thank you for reading and writing such a nice review for A Father for Bella. That was so kind of you. I really appreciate it!

    • Thank you so much, Jill. I am running out of daylight and my daughter is asking for my life stories now while I can still write them so the writing for me may take a different direction. We as children, didn’t do Halloween and my children did it only on occasion but it’s a favorite of my daughter’s. The review of your book was easy. I really enjoyed the story. Love a happy ending. Happy Halloween.

      • I love a happy ending too, Marlene. I can’t imagine writing anything different. I’m so happy to hear you’re writing your life stories for your family. I’ve been after my father for years to write his own. He has on and off, but since he’s my mother’s full-time caregiver now, his time is limited and he’s getting worn down. I hope you’ll share some of your stories on this blog as I truly enjoyed your Suzy-Q stories. 🙂

      • Thank you, Jill. I’m considering sharing some of them. Focus is the thing I struggle with most right now. So much to finish up. 🙂

      • Staying focused is a challenge for me too, Marlene. I even started to drink some Yogi tea made for focus. 🙂

  2. It was lovely haunting you yesterday. 😉 That first photo is truly terrifying. I would love to get my hands on a decal that awful, ha ha!! I can relate to a lot of this post, so you are not alone with the memories and the well of dead plots (that made me crack up!). Seven years is a legacy when it comes to the impact you’ve had on the Internet (believe me, you have touched souls, and not in a scary way), but in a human life it’s only a blip. I am grateful that we found each other during that blip. ❤

    • The decal is my son’s and in storage, I think. I think I have a book with the title of well of dead plots. 😉 I was tickled to see you yesterday with your good news as well. Thank you so much for your kind encouragement. I’ll give it serious consideration. I have a lot of writing to do because my daughter wants all my stories of my life. That will take quite some time. 😉 Happy Halloween. Hugs

  4. The cemetery of unread posts is quiet tonight. No-one is keeping count on whether you’ve Read/Liked/Responded, we are just happy when you do. Do a quick body count of the draft posts, save some from damnation and consign the others to the Outer Darkness. You have reached the age of discretion and can decide to simply post when you feel like it and think you have something to say, rather than because you feel you Shoulda or Coulda. As for writing about the past: is it fun, or does it raise uncomfortable ghosts? I don’t like travelling back in time, myself…

    • My kids keep saying “I didn’t know that about you” when something comes up in conversation. I’ve had an interesting journey and yes, some has been painful but they need to know how to overcome and grow from adversity. My daughter is adamant that I write it down for her as the stories come up. All difficulties are temporary. How we respond creates us. I’ve backed off of blogging but can’t quite give it up. You notice that the posts are further apart and quite short. Your time it too valuable for me to waste as is mine. 🙂 I’ll try to make my time here count. I love keeping up with you and your creativity.

  9. Kate has said it perfectly Marlene, take this as a ditto on her comment and question. I admit to a feeling of wanting my story to be told and yet being completely unwilling to go there, especially as the years have passed and I moved on. But now find myself the last one standing so to speak. I vacillate between it matters and it doesn’t matter…. perhaps if the question is asked it might be answered, otherwise let it be….. I don’t know, I’m rambling 🙂 Anyway, Happy Anniversary. You have been blogging a long time and I am glad to have met you through that. Do what matters enough to you. xoxo

    • Thank you so much, Pauline and you are right, Kate has a good point. So I’ll do my best. There is no one in this world that gets out unscathed and I’ve found I’ve learned the most from other’s ability to overcome. That’s what I want to pass on to my much loved children. They really have no idea how strong or how fragile their mother is. it’s not all about the rough times. It’s been quite an interesting journey and I have learned adaptability and resilience have been my greatest allies. I’ll keep trying to keep up here too. I really think you should share your stories because so many could benefit from what you have learned from this life. I know I did. I also know that in getting it down on paper, it shines a light on your life which in your case has benefited many.

  10. Happy blogiversary and happy Halloween, Marlene! 7 years – that’s no small feat! And I can completely understand why your daughter wants you to write all the stories of your life and it’s so wonderful that you do.
Your decorations are so lovely! Halloween is not as big a deal here as it is in the US but people always love a chance to celebrate. 😉 And the kids of course love it too – their costumes get scarier each year I think! 😂

    • Thank you, Sarah. It’s not my holiday either but I loved painting cute things and making silly banners for it. My daughter still does a costume for work each year. It’s her special day. My son loves it too but being brought up mostly in Germany, we didn’t “do” Halloween. I put a bowl of candy out for the little ones in our neighborhood but that’s it for me. It will be a quiet night. Every year I think it will be my last one. Who knows. 🙂

      • I think making all these decorations is the best side of any holidays. 😉 I made a little pumpkin from clay but forgot to get it out of my kiln so I need to wait until next week when the Autumn holidays are over. And I think it´s great that your daughter does her own costume each year – such fun! 😀

  11. Happy Anniversary, Marlene. I don’t post much, by the time I finish working on the genealogy, it just doesn’t happen. Things are very quiet here as most of the buildings are either apartments/condos or commercial properties so no kids trick-or-treating, don’t miss that at all. Too many teenagers instead of littles, rowdy, rude and occasionally nasty instead of cute, funny and sweet. I do usually get to read the bogs I follow and comment occasionally, but posting myself, well, I don’t do much that’s intersting or worth writing about.

    • Thanks for stopping by, Aquila. We are a park of single family manufactured homes and a carload of kids were driven by their parents but didn’t stop here. It was raining so most of the kids that live here find it too far to walk. I agree, I don’t care for the rowdy teens so it was quiet here last night too. As for posting, my mind is filled with so many more pressing things at the moment but hopefully, I’ll get focused soon. Trying to keep it light and silly as life is a bit droll some days. We each do what we can. Take care of yourself and try to see the fun in some of it.

  12. Congratulations on the blogging anniversary. Thinking of your Dad must be a mix of bitter/sweet feelings. Absolutely go for writing your life stories for your family, especially as your daughter has asked you. Personally I would delete all draft posts, they have remained drafts for a reason. Write a post when you feel like it, not because you should, same with reading posts. Sometimes there are just too many to read – delete the lot, then read the new ones which attract your attention. Life is too short.

    • Thank you for the sage advice, Cathy. I shall heed it. I asked my dad what the hell was he thinking dying on Halloween! He has a devilish streak in him to the end. 😉 He was the one who helped me with my English and the spelling of said language. I owe him my words. 😉 Life is indeed too short. Have a lovely weekend.

  13. That’s a lot of years blogging, Marlene! And, in some ways, you’ve been writing your life story along the way, at least dropping hints and providing insights to what makes you tick. I hope your kids don’t overlook that. Like you, I sometimes get overwhelmed by the number of posts I haven’t managed to read and the ones I haven’t managed to write. But you’ve gotten great advice from others here and I’m going to take that advice to heart, too. Read/comment/blog when you can–you know you’d miss us if you didn’t !! (And we’d miss you!!!)

    • Thank you, Kerry and for stopping by. I’m happy to know I’m not alone on the overwhelm here. So many write everyday and the posts are long so I just can’t keep up and do my work too. I’ll keep going as long as possible. Your kind words mean a lot.

  14. Happy Halloween, Marlene. I don’t like the horror, either. I enjoy the excitement. And, Happy Anniversary. I couldn’t bear it if you stopped blogging. I know, that’s terribly selfish and childish, but true. Like you, my mountain of stuff to attend to never seems to go away. I just learn to let go and enjoy the little things. There really are so many wonderful moments and little things, aren’t there? My best to you.

  17. Marlene, I’m so happy to be reading your words today. It’s been a hectic time here, but things are easing and it feels good. I’ve read your wonderful post and the equally wonderful conversations that followed. I think I may have read your very first post about Halloween and I can still remember it. Seven years! It’s a milestone. I’ll join the chorus of others saying “blog when you feel like it” and “don’t worry about a schedule”, but I too would miss your posts a lot if they stopped (even though I know it’s not about me!) 😉 I would love to chat by phone soon. Meanwhile, sending love and hugs.

I appreciate you stopping by and am always thinking of you. You can let me know when you have time for a phone visit. It’s a little crazy here too but I always have time to visit. 😉 Love and hugs heading back to you as well,

  19. Hello Vonderfrau ! OMGosh, it feels like forever since I’ve taken time to stroll around WordPress. I’m busy with so many work things, but think of you often. Hope you’re not getting too much rain. Funny, it rained her last night and continues to be grey and drizzly. Unusual for November here. It’s the hubster’s Birthday tomorrow and we always remember whether or not there was snow. We didn’t do much for Halloween besides hand out a lot of treats. We got about 130 kids I think. Far less than last year. That’s a scary porch you’ve conjured up, LOL. xo K

    • Good to have your visit. Miss you a lot. Happy birthday to your hubby. There were no children here for Halloween so I gave the candy to my daughter to take to work for the co-workers. We have not had much rain this year and hopefully no snow this year or at least not a lot. This town is not equipped to handle snow. It comes to a screeching halt. Hope the weather treats you kindly this year. Have a wonderful birthday celebration. Hugs.

  20. I am also sometimes haunted by all I have to do. Blogging though, in a sense, gives me that push I need to share my stories, and to write the ones clamoring to be heard. I love your blog and hope you continue, in whatever shape/form you decide. It’s so magnificent to be connected with each other here in the blogosphere – a GOOD kind of virtual haunting. xo
