Plants

It’s been the busiest, craziest summer in so many ways. I’m supposed to be slowing down at this time in life. I’m thinking that as we age, most of us realize we are running short on time and want to stuff as much life and action into what’s left rather than just take it easy.

I have taken a hiatus from my sewing fun and friends as well as blogging to concentrate as much time as possible to getting chores around here completed. Once the carport was repaired, we concentrated on purging, gardening and getting expenses managed so my daughter could afford a car that ran to more than the mechanic. Mission accomplished. More on that next time.

This is the 1997 that’s finally going to get sold, hopefully

Next came getting 3 pickup loads of yard mulch. My sister volunteered her pickup and we did our best to off load it with a little help. My niece looks 12 but is 20 and worked like a trooper on the second load. I’ll tell you about the third load later too. The mulch goes around the plants so they don’t require so much water. The front is getting an update as well.

Rosemary has been trimmed back, lavender harvested so very early and the Albizzia tree that my son bought a couple years ago and planted has had several trims this summer just to get around it. I did not know it would be so large and unwieldy. It’s not in a good spot for the size it will get. Should have done more research.

My Aster has started blooming three weeks early! Never before has it bloomed before September first.

Asters blooming in August

Asters later

I have a new plant given me by my friend, Sabine and it’s showing off it’s first bloom. I truly love being in the yard and playing in the dirt as long as it’s not very hot or sunny. I don’t see all that well in the bright sunlight even after getting a new prescription and glasses.

Pineapple Lily

Things started out well enough though I noticed I was having difficulty seeing clearly when looking down at the ground. I was using a shovel to lift the stepping stones so I could move them out. That job has not been completed yet since I found another kind of plant in the process.

The steps were buried under the ground cover. Time for a face lift.

A different look for me too.

You have heard of the Face Plant I’m certain. I thought I did marvelous in staggering over the shovel handle on my way down and only winding up with some serious road rash, bent my new glasses but no broken bones of any nature. All the padding makes me bounce well.

Face Plant with road rash

Since I don’t care much for that kind of plant and don’t want any more of them, I called my daughter to drive me to the eye care clinic. She was more than happy to leave work early on a Friday. It took the new optometrist three tries at a prescription due to childhood optic nerve damage but looking down is still a problem. So, no shovels will be left laying down. I prefer my plants upright, thank you very much. It did slow things down a bit but I’m almost back in business now. More to this story coming. I won’t dawdle this time, promise. I’ve missed you all.

My birthday t-shirt. So very true

Welcome to September. Have you had any unusual plants in your garden?

From my heart to yours,

  1. Ouch! I love your shirt and you. Take care of yourself out there. Are we both September babies?

    Liked by 4 people

    • I am today and if you are then we both are Sept born. Yes, that hurt for a bit but it could have been so much worse. I discovered my prescription was incorrect. It takes a LOT of time to get it right and most HMO’s don’t give them enough time. Thanks for stopping by. Hugs.

  2. Hey Marlene! Lovely to see you here on your blog again, although the road rash incident is not good to hear. Thankfully no serious damage.
I do like your stepping stones and it is great that you have rescued them from being smothered by the ground cover. You have been busy though! I am glad to hear that you and Sabine have been visiting! Unusual plants? I had a bat plant once! It looks highly Gothic and could have been right at home in the Addams family mansion! It passed away gently many years ago though. Now my plants are all pretty mainstream. The new garden will be a bit of challenge with the salty acidic waterlogged clay soil. Hugs.

  3. Your plants are looking amazing, the whole garden is going to be one big extravaganza!!! You must have naturally green fingers?
Sorry about your fall – hoping you heal chopchop, and take care please xxx

    • Thanks for the visit, Jill, and the kind words. Working on making it low maintenance. I did heal very quickly and once I got a better pair of glasses, I was back at it. We really rely on those old peepers of ours. 😉 Have a great week.

  5. Ooh, a pineapple lily, I love them! I’ve just brought my phalaenopsis orchids inside as the temperature is rising steadily and I don’t want them scorched. Love your shirt, which made me think of the Louis McNeice poem here: (https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/628056-september-has-come-it-is-hers-whose-vitality-leaps-in)

    • My friend, Sabine who blogs also, wants to give me another. I’m undecided and if I take it, it needs good space. They get quite large! My daughter keeps the orchids in her room where the light is best and filtered. I love the poem. Thank you for the visit.

  6. I’m so sorry to hear about your fall, Marlene. I’m relieved you weren’t seriously hurt. My father did a face plant off a curb at the grocery store. He was banged up pretty bad, but thankfully good people came to his assistance. The plants are looking great! Your niece is a good worker and so cute!

    • I think I remember you writing about your dads fall or is that just my imagination? I’m usually extra careful due to my balance issue but the sun was in my eye and it was watering as I looked down. Couldn’t see anything. I was very fortunate in so many ways. My niece is spending the first semester this year in Prague. We miss her but it’s so good for her, She’s gone to Nicaragua to build toilets and water supplies. She has a great heart. The fall was serendipitous. Worked to my benefit so I was just a little embarrassed. I thought I’d broken my nose but it’s pliable too. 😉 About halfway through your book. One chapter a night so I savor rather than gulp it. Hugs

      • Oh gosh…it could have been much worse. No need to feel embarrassed, everyone has accidents. I may have mentioned my dad’s fall in comments. He has balance issues as well, so I’m always worrying about him falling. What an exciting semester for your niece. I guess she gets her heart from her aunt! 🙂 Thanks for reading xo

  7. Jeez, Marlene! You need to be careful–that looks painful! I do love seeing your garden and I can relate to how much work it is–I wish I had a helpful 20-year-old to work with me! Your summer has been a flurry of activity–I hope that means you can start to relax soon . . . .

    Liked by 1 person

    • It was more embarrassing than painful, Kerry. And I was able to get the prescription changed free because I’d only had the glasses a week and they were responsible for the fall. I wish I had that 20=year-old here more but she’s gone to Prague for a semester and has little time to help us old folks out. She does try though. Relax??? I don’t think you know the meaning of the word any more than I do. 🙂 Getting close to done though, Outside at least. Sigh.

  8. Happy Birthday, Marlene. I am so glad you are recovering from your face plant. I had one about 11 years ago and it hurt A LOT. I also damaged my glasses and my wrist watch. There have been no repeats and I hope there won’t be any for you. How lovely to have family to gather round to help. Your garden is looking lovely.

  9. I am so sorry about your fall, Marlene! You have been working hard (as usual) seems I have been such a slacker (as usual). Things must be looking quite lovely in your garden. So very much looking forward to seeing you next week! Until then.

  10. Glad you’re doing okay after the shovel got in your way Marlene! It’s always so satisfying to tidy up the garden as summer ends. The mulch should help with weeds as well come next spring.
I have some tidying to do in my two small spaces and the owners have decided, I believe, to take out the huge overgrown butterfly tree directly in front of my apartment. It’s so pretty when it blooms but no one has maintained it and last winter over half of it was on the ground with heavy snow. The birds like to sit in it and of course the butterflies and hummers love it so I guess my feeders will be really popular next year. It also provides some nice shade to my front lawn area and that will be gone. Will have to find a new shady place to sit outside 😦 I was doing a little research yesterday on smallish, low growing, non-spreading plants that butterflies like. I may try to plant a few in my space to keep the flyers and bees happy next spring.
    Take care!

    • Let me know what you find out about a replacement for the butterfly bush. I’m going to take mine way down this year. They offer so much privacy in my bedroom from next door. I have mine in a planter box which contains them from spreading but they get so very tall. I trim them back each year. I’m glad I didn’t hurt more than my pride as well. Just have to work differently now. As in sitting down more. 😉

      Liked by 1 person

      • I will try to remember to post something once I get a better idea of what will fit in my space. The owner confirmed today the bush is going but she is replacing it with something that will still give us a shaded yard once it grows some… years down the line!! I may have to look into a used pop-up canopy for next summer, although not sure where I would store it 😉

  11. Your plants sure look healthy, Marlene, and I hope that you’re recovering quickly from your fall. Glad that no limbs were broken! I only wish that I had a garden to report, but my current apartment doesn’t offer that option. Still working on that…

  12. Wow, Marlene! I’m glad you are ok!
Your plants look beautiful. Working in the dirt is very satisfying. We’ve spent a good part of our summer working to finish up our yard. We started with just dirt and an enormous amount of weeds! The front is done, and the back is sooo close. Take care, my friend. And happy September!

    • Thanks for the visit, Missy. You know what I’m talking about with all the work you are doing. It’s a labor of love. If I had better balance, it would be easier. I’m going to have to do more of my work sitting on the ground. 🙂 Have a happy September too.

  13. Marlene, I’m glad you didn’t break anything in your fall! Your garden always looks beautiful! The pineapple lily looks great! I have four blooming this year and found a tiny one that had gotten crowded out by some other plants. Let me know if you want another one. Love the aster too. I’ve never had much luck with them. I’m about to head out in hopes of taming the bamboo. It’s about to kiss the house! 😬
Enjoy the cooler temps and be well! 🙋

    • Hi, Sabine. I have a lot to do soon and next week is looking good with the rain coming. I’m not sure about putting in another Pineapple Lilly. I have to find space for it up there. Thinking of taking the peonies out and moving them. They didn’t do any better than the tall lilies on the other side this year. They may need fresh soil. Good luck with the bamboo. It can get away from you. Have a great week. Take care. Hugs.

I hurt my pride the most but it did get me a new prescription. for my glasses. 😉 Everything has a silver lining. Thanks for stopping by, Linda.

  17. Oh for heavens sake Marlene – you are much too old to be taking dives now! But reading through the comments – there is advantage in being a late visitor – I see you found the silver lining of better service in the optometry department…… Also I’m glad to hear you are feeling better already. It’s such a shock when we find ourselves going down and there is no way to stop. Did you have that experience of feeling the weight of your head in that split second before it smashed your face into the ground? Oi vay!! Happy Birthday darling xoxo

    • I think my nose broke the fall. 😉 It was hilarious to observe from the minds perspective. Fortunately, the nose didn’t break. Once I got myself up and stopped the nose bleed, I had a good laugh over it. Had to go 45 miles each way to another optometrist but it was well worth it. My daughter took me out for dinner and a cold beer at my favorite German restaurant after. We made a party out of it. Thank you for the birthday wishes. It was a good day.

I don’t want to be late so I send it on the 4th to make sure you get it on the 5th. 😉 I have used your little blue bookmark in my new Chicken Soup book “Angels Among Us” It looks like an Angels face in the blue and greens. Hence the stumble. I often think of giving up the blogging but it gets too lonesome without all the connections. Thank you for the birthday wishes. I was surprised to have another one. Love your Tshirt; I’m a September woman, too.

I’m happy you will be back sooner; I’ve missed you and your posts. Not that I can say much; I’ve had lots going on here, too and it’s been ages since I wrote anything.

  20. Well aren’t you an inspiration? Shoveling garden mulch and moving heavy pavers sounds like something to be left to the younger folk. I’m glad you didn’t break any bones when you fell, geez Louise Marlene-a-go-go !! You need to be Marlene-a-go-slow from now on.
That Albizia shrub looks like a giant fern. I’ve never heard of them before, so I’m sure they aren’t hardy enough here. Not much is. We’ve had endless rainy days here this summer. I won’t bore you with the numbers but it was double of what we’d usually get. Feels like we’re in a rain vortex of sorts, it just never stopped. Your ground cover bed looks fantastic ! Hugs K

    • Thanks so much, Kelly. The younger folks can’t do it either. They wear out faster and are not inspired to work so hard. I love it…until I fall down. 😉 The Albizia will grow to be either 20 ft tall or 150 depending on the variety we have. Who knew. We had more summer rain this year then in the last 10 summers. It’s been very odd. Autumn is coming early too. I will eventually get it all done,..SLOWLY. At 71, I don’t move as fast. 😉 Hugs. M

  21. Ouch, Marlene! I never thought of gardening as a contact sport before.

My garden always surprises me. It is an independent thinker, prone to doing what it darn well pleases, like the two liatris plants not 3 feet apart. One bloomed but the other did not. But that’s gardening for you!

    Liked by 2 people

    • Ha! A contact sport indeed. Yes, I agree, gardens are independent thinkers. I always try to let my garden tell me what it wants but have had much the same experiences you have. I had 2 Daphne bushes and one wasn’t happy so I moved it. Then it died. The other is still tiny but finally growing. The garden can be a bit fussy. Thanks for stopping by, Susanne.

I think my pride would be what hurt most of all, too, if I fell. I hope the new glasses make a big difference. It’s very good to see you back here, and I’m glad to see your niece again too. She’s such a good person.

Don’t look down. 🙂 Niece is in Prague for the semester so we all miss her. She is a very good person. She had a good time with the bark dust since it was something new to her. You have been so, so busy, a little like us, we had the decorating bug on the inside of the house this summer.. 🙂
Love that you are mulching and your garden will benefit no end from it.. Good thing your niece was raring to give you a hand that looks a lot of mulch shovelling!!

As to your Aster, here in the UK I think we are about a month in front with everything, from flowers to crops ripening.. We had a mild early spring that helped…

Good to see you Marlene.. and no more playing bouncy shovel.. ❤ 🙂

(better glasses) Two weeks ago I could not “see” a sharp edged wood bunk board over my head, and I don’t know how, but I managed to hit it very hard! As you can imagine I am walking around looking up a lot more!! There are times of day the sun is too bright for me as well. I too feel the need to get as much as I can done at this stage of life. :o) My yard needs my help and the days seem to just fly by.

Amazing that your aster is already in bloom but I’ve noticed a lot plants starting earlier this year too. Now many of mine are yellowing already and the temperatures have dropped to I-need-wear-my-sneakers-instead-of-Birkenstocks now. 😉 Wishing you a very lovely September!

I was just grumbling that everything time I come back from the garden, I have legs more scraped up than before and scratches on my arms. But so far, falls in the garden haven’t been face down. I hope you feel stellar soon. Your garden looks fabulous.

Lunch, cookies, free weight loss routine. Any takers? This is my first serious tumble in all the years of dizziness I’ve had. I’m usually quite strategic when I work to avoid it. Scrapes and scratches are a gardeners trophies. Bruises show we haven’t been watching soaps and eating bonbons. Wear them proudly.

I too have had a few times falling over with it usually ending with sore hands, I can only imagine how horrible it must be on the face. I’m thinking of widening my paths to help prevent trips and being more vigilant with myself putting things down on it.
