Looking for answers to life's questions

In the middle of last week, fully (almost) recovered from my birthday blowout and some intense yard overhauling, I had a chance to do something I’ve only had the opportunity to do a few times before. I met a former blogger, Jan, from https://mommermom.wordpress.com/. She is no longer blogging but we have kept in touch through email and snail mail. I received a card several weeks ago that she had a little time before her flight from Portland airport and would I be available to meet? So, of course, I rearranged an appointment to go meet her in person. She was with a friend from college meeting other friends from college so it was lively conversation.

Satiated with lunch at Beaches

We had a lovely lunch and of course, we all had lots of questions. Jan no longer has a reliable computer and felt blogging was taking too much precious time from her large family. We all know how that is with more commitments than time.

Lunch was good, conversation was better.

Jan’s friend is a retired librarian and asked why I blog. I explained why I started blogging when I became so ill that I could do little else than read or write. No television, no sewing, no driving and barely being able to ride or walk without tipping over were a fact of life for well over two years. The more I thought about it the more I realized I didn’t fully answer that question. Why do I still blog when it crosses my mind like so many other’s whose posts I enjoyed, to give it up?

My birthday t-shirt. So very true

The simple answer is in the last line of the September t-shirt I wear. I have a mouth I can’t control. I’m a blabbermouth, a storyteller, a communicator. I love to converse and I will tell you about myself to get you to tell me about you. There is a level of trust involved here and I’ve never been let down and work hard at not letting anyone else down.

Thank you, Jan.

I don’t have time to blog. I also need this community more than it needs me. As I’ve healed from one profound illness and face another, bloggers have helped sustain a positive focus. Giving this up is like cutting a main artery. Friends I have made here will always be friends in my heart. The people I meet virtually all have good hearts and are trustworthy. Getting to meet them in person is an extra bonus. So, thank you Jan, for including me in your visit to the area. You and your friend were a delight to spend time with and I felt like we had know each other for years.

Asters in full bloom

Have you had chances to meet fellow bloggers? How was your experience of it?

From my heart to yours,
Marlene Herself

  1. I have not had the pleasure of meeting fellow bloggers but it is a sincere goal of mine! If I was rich, I would buy all the bloggers I interact with a plane ticket and a hotel room for a week and have a get together! 🙂 who knows……..maybe some day!

  2. I’m happy you and Jan were able to meet in person, Marlene. I haven’t met any of my blogger buds in person yet, but I always enjoy reading these meet-up stories and seeing the pictures. You all look great! I’m glad you’ve found comfort in the blogging community. I feel the same. Enjoy your weekend! xo

    • Thank you so much, Jill. I am so lucky they have all come to me since the airport is the marker of the distance I can drive. 🙂 Each person I have met is as delightful in the flesh as they are in their writing. I think we all wear our hearts on our sleeves. 😉 Sunshine today, rain tomorrow. 🙂 Hugs.

  3. I am so happy to see happy photos of you and Jan together. I am so glad you have sat together and had a good chat. She still pops in here from time to time and I always enjoy our brief interactions – such a lovely soul! I think your birthday teeshirt is both a hoot and so true. I’m sure if I ever saw one here I’d snap it up as it applies fully to me also 🙂 I wonder if their sayings are as true for other months or if they just got September spot on………… I hope we both get to meet many more of our favourite bloggers!

  5. I follow 2 bloggers from here in Washington and you are the 3rd closest I think Marlene, being in Oregon. All the rest are spread out across the US and a few are in England. I can’t begin to imagine the logistics it would take to meet up with the majority of them!
I’m glad you had a good visit though.

    • It was really nice to meet her since we have been pen pals since she quite blogging. I’m normally 20 min from the airport unless they are working on the highway. Almost everyday now. ;( Have you met any of them in person? It isn’t always easy. Thanks for stopping by, Deb.

  7. How wonderful to meet up with a blogging friend! As a Virgo I totally relate to that t-shirt. Now I’m going to buy one, add it to the bumper sticker. You are encouraging my shopping Marlene.

    • Happy Birthday month, Cindy. Welcome to the Virgo’s club. I should have known! 😉 Retail therapy is good for us. I’m going to hunt down the source of that shirt for another friend of mine out of country. 😉 Shh!

  8. Meeting up with distant friends is special but meeting a blogger you interact regularly with, is extra special. It sounds like such a fun get together! When I met Ineke from https://scrapydo2.wordpress.com in New Zealand, it was a similar experience to yours, in that we felt like we had been friends for many years. Perhaps blogging speeds up the depth of a relationship? By that, I mean that writing affords us an opportunity to chat about things that face to face friendships might not get to, in verbal conversation, because of other distractions. The written word allows us to really convey our intentions and thoughts that enhance and deepen the friendship. I can relate to blogging taking up a lot of Jan’s time and can say that I am becoming a bit addicted to blogging as my blog grows. A bad thing? Not if I keep tabs on it.

    • I had to take a little time off posting this summer but continued to try and read other’s posts. I talk like I might give it up but just can’t. I’d be more isolated than I already am which is not a good thing. I think you can tell a lot about someone in their writing. I don’t think you can really hide yourself here. I agree that blogging cuts to the core quicker than most connections. I am so glad I met you here. You are always challenging the status quo. You have an open mind and for me, that is essential. Thanks for stopping by, Amanda.

      • Aw! Thanks so much, Marlene. Likewise, your blog is like spiritual food for me! Your compliments means a lot and will always encourage me. Although I am about to make a post where I feel sure I have closed off my mind, yet I feel I have to get it off my chest, and hope that other bloggers will make me see reason…. that sounds terribly selfish in that I should sort out my thinking for myself, but I also hope it will be useful to share my patterns of thinking so that they can be challenged when they are wrong.

  9. It sounds like a tremendously fun day 🙂 I value blogging so much because it’s an opportunity to reach out to kindred spirits, make friends, share ideas, explain my thoughts and ask for help. We support and encourage each other. I would be incredibly sad to lose blogging. I regularly meet with blogging friends in person; not frequently, but I make a point of seeing them in person when I’m travelling their way. I Skype or FaceTime with others who are too remote.

    • I love my friends I’ve been through blogging. They are much like family to me!

    • There are two who live close enough to get together with on occasion. I have tried Skype unsuccessfully and never FaceTime. I may consider it again. I am more awkward face to face than when I’m writing. My speech is sometimes hard to understand due to the paralysis so communicating here is easiest for me but it’s not the same as person to person. I love the exchange of ideas too and I feel like I know your heart. You are so kind and generous that if I ever get to travel, I would love to meet you too.

      • If we ever win the big lottery here, the plan is to go round the world on cruise ships, stopping off everywhere to visit friends and family. I have TWO reasons to visit Portland, and you’re one of them! Sadly, it’ll never happen otherwise; my dodgy back won’t allow me to sit still in a plane seat any longer than about 2 hours before the pain starts to get unmanageable.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I know how hard it is to sit on a plane that many hours. My concern these days is getting enough oxygen. We are working on a plan though. 🙂 I love this city very much. But the time has come to expand my bubble again. 😉

  12. I think lots of us started blogging when we were in need of reaching out to others, I know I did. I have met four of my fellow bloggers and we got on so well. Two no longer blog and one has recently slipped off the radar, it’s sad when people do just gradually disappear, but that’s life. So good that you kept in touch with someone who stopped blogging.

    • Blogging does open our world when it’s become smaller for many reasons, doesn’t it? Yes, many slip off the radar and that is sad. I try to email and snail mail if I have addresses to keep in touch. Maybe it’s because I’ve moved so often that I hate losing people for any reason. I’m happy to also were able to meet a few fellow bloggers. Such fun. Thanks for the visit, Cathy.

  13. How wonderful, to have had this meet-up! Like you, I regularly consider giving up on blogging–it *is* time-consuming and there are so many other things that I could/should be doing. And yet I keep coming back–I would miss you and many others if I didn’t keep at this. I haven’t met other bloggers face-to-face. Maybe someday . . .

You are also as I expected, kind, sweet, engaging, and enjoyable. Thank you so much for rearranging your schedule to meet up with me and to include Mary Ann. I will most definitely look forward to another opportunity to see you again. Thank you for your warm and heartfelt card and letting me know how much you also enjoyed our visit. I was especially thrilled to see the card designed by another terrific blogger, Pauline at The Contented Crafter. A true work of art to be shared. 💙

Which is why I take blogging breaks and come back refreshed lol
Its a wonderful privilege to have got to know you Marlene as we have discovered our very similar interests..
Sometimes the friends we meet here in our blogging world are more sincere than those we meet in our real every day world..
    So thank you…
Loved your latest adventure so good to see you looking so well.. And your Asters just Beautiful …

    • Thank you for your kind words, Sue. We do have many common interests and philosophies. I relate more to your philosophy than any other blog I follow. I have met several local bloggers and of course my friend, Alys who came to visit me last year.
I too took a couple of months off this summer with the big projects I had going around here. It helped me to look forward to this wonderful autumn weather we are having now so I get to spend more time inside. The rain really pummeled the asters so I’m glad I captured that photo when I did. So happy to see the rain. I’m so glad you are out there to say what I think but am not as articulate as you to express. It helps me know I’m not alone. Thank you for your friendship. Hugs. M

  19. Well, you just made my day, Marlene. What a gracious gesture for Jan to hook up with you. You describe blogging and fellow blogging friends beautifully. Like you, I can’t imagine being without my blogging friends. Yes, friends. Through writing, we get to know each other far better than many of our ‘in person’ friends. Is it the writing that links us? I can open my heart when I write, far better than I can in person. Somehow I think we are all like-minded in this way. Funny thing, I often think of my blogging friends as some of my best friends. It feels good. I hope one day I’ll have an opportunity to meet one, like you did with Jan. Thank you for a lovely, reflective, post, Marlene. Best to you! ❤️

  20. J & D > The only ‘bloggers’ we’ve met in person are those that read others’ blogs but don’t post themselves!!! They come to the walled garden and the Hebridean Woolshed’s shop – just like any other anonymous visitor to our place, but when they come to the house to pay for something that’s taken their fancy, they mention, by the by, that the follow our blog and enjoy it very much. There’s two or three who have called in like that a few times each – and now we recognize them.

  21. What a sweet adventure, Marlene! We really do keep our blogging friends close to our hearts. I have met one local blogging friend in person a few times. I have been so fortunate to meet my favorite author/artist, Susan Branch, in person three times. She was my inspiration for beginning a blog! I have also deepened other blogging friendships by connecting via Skype, FaceTime, and lots of lovely letter writing over the years.
I’m so happy that we can share our stories through our blog posts, Marlene! Wishing you a healthy start to Autumn! 💗

    • Thank you so much, Dawn. I’m just getting back to blogging after 2 months away. A VERY busy summer this year. You are so fortunate to have met Susan Branch. I love her art too. I’m not so good with the Skype and Facetime thing but still send out cards as often as possible. Now that autumn has arrived here, I’ll have more time to catch up with the blogs I want to read. Rainy days mean I can stay inside. 😉 Your post is open and awaiting my viewing. I also keep my blogging friends close to my heart. The t-shirt tells the whole truth about me. I hope to wear it for many years. ;)Thanks for the visit.

  23. I’m so glad that you could meet Jan in person, Marlene! And I think you’re spot on – there’s a certain trust in the blogging community and we wear our hearts on our sleeves when we write . I haven’t met any of my friends from WP in person yet, but I really hope I will someday, especially when I read about get-togethers like yours. Sadly most of my blogging friends live on a different continent like I do, so getting together will take some serious planning, not to mention finding the funds to fly there! But I dream of a tour around the world to meet you all one day!

    • I dream of that trip around the world as well, Sarah. Waiting to see if I can make it happen. I met a German lady in my writing class several years ago and talked her into starting a blog as well. We have become good friends since our writing class days. Maybe you can find someone near you to share this interest with. Until I make the trip back to Germany anyway. 😉 Thanks for the visit.

      • I’m looking very much forward to your visit, Marlene! 😉 It’s funny but I don’t have one single German blogging friend but I guess that’s partly due to me blogging in English. I started out writing my posts both in German and English on two blogs but then crossed paths with a German ‘troll’ and quit the German blog altogether. Funnily enough I haven’t yet come across any trolls on my English written blog. 😄

      • Isn’t it? I really don’t know why but in general I think that Germans tend to complain a bit more than others, and they’re also a bit hesitant with making compliments, and even worse with accepting them. 😉 When I take a look at German blogs I always wonder about the tone on conversation, it’s so much less heartfelt and inspiring. I feel extremely lucky to be able to communicate in English!!

  24. Sweet Marlene! It’s so fun and interesting to get to know you. 🙂 I’ve met a couple other bloggers in my blogging circle – and they are exactly how I imagined they’d be. One came across with a strong personality and she was just as strong in real life. Another was quirky online and turned out to be just as quirky in real life. All good things! I have often asked myself the same. I’ve spent SO MUCH time building up my website. I can say I’ve met some incredible people. Some of my closest friends are people I’ve never met in real life, but they are just as important to me as the people I’ve met in person. In the end, I just take breaks for awhile and then come back and continue. 🙂 I hope you’ve been well. Sending you hugs!!

  26. Reading all the comments on this post has been a lot of fun. I like seeing peoples’ range of experience with meeting other bloggers, or just people who read their blogs, or who haven’t yet met anyone in person but want to. It strikes a chord with me, what you said about trust and blogging. I wonder if you meant it how I took it: that the depth of honesty and trust in our blogging communities means that when we meet each other, we are safe. The person we meet in real life is exactly who we thought they were after reading their blogs, and comments. I recently met a blogger in southern Oregon, and that idea occurred to me when I posted about it. I said to my readers “Pat yourselves on the back for being awesome.” In my experience so far, the blogger friends I have met turn out to be great people in real life, so I assume all of them are! It must have been fun to see the dynamics of Jan and her college friend! I’ll bet they had stories to tell.

    • I don’t think a person can really hide in their writing. Every thing comes to the surface. It’s almost as accurate as handwriting. I don’t follow people that I get a bad vibe from and they won’t follow me so as they say, like attracts like. I’m so far behind in my reading and everything else, I need to be chained to this and the sewing machine for months. The house is finally passable. ;( I’m glad your experience was a good one too. Hugs.
