Solstice

Yesterday and today the sun rose and set at the same time. I’m waiting to see what happens tomorrow. Will we get that extra minute or two of daylight? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE winter and all it brings. Mostly the lack of blistering heat, though I am solar powered so lack of daylight really seems to be slowing me down. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. It has nothing to do with age, right?

October starts the countdown with dragging out Halloween decorations. I tried to make something new this year but it failed twice. Once the machine messed up and the second time, I did. I’ll try again later after the new year and see if I have better luck.

The Halloween mistake, machine embroidery

Then November gets darker and days are even shorter. I finally get Autumn decor out and looking nice when I have to take it all down and replace it with Christmas. I’m still not ready. I made an embroidery for a friend who is a bird and animal whisperer. They always pose for her so beautifully. I was hoping to add a little levity to her special day.

machine embroidery for a giggle

December is filled with activity. We had a quilting/sewing meeting at a member’s home for a potluck. Pam went all out to make it look so festive for us. Her husband joined us for lunch and wondered if we were always so talkative and noisy. But of course! Her husband helped make the cute flower pot pants for each of us. He did the wood part; she did the pants part. We each went home with one of these adorable sitting pants pots. We were also stuffed to the gills.

Then came the potluck at my pulmonary fibrosis support group. We always get a lot of good information there but this time we had food. I brought a meatball and noodle dish in the crock post. The rest was finger food and dessert. I also made Watergate and brought pies since my daughter was joining us as my chauffeur and caregiver. It was a small group this time as the rain was coming down buckets. There are no pictures of this event. Too busy asking questions and feeding myself.

In between all of this, I’ve been trying to do a tiny bit of sewing. I can’t show you all of it because one is a gift. I made a panel wall hanging that I put in the sewing room window. It’s been waiting a long time to get done. I also made window sill pads for Gracie with Christmas flannel. My son asked me to find a way to keep them from slipping off the sill when Gracie gets up. Hope the nubby slipper bottom fabric does the trick.

Solstice for me is a time for quiet reflection. According to CNN Travel, these celebrations symbolize the opportunity for renewal, a shedding of bad habits and negative feelings and an embracing of hope amid darkness as the days once again begin to grow longer.

Winter in the window

We give some thought to our new direction for the longer days to come. In the meantime, I just finish a batch of pumpkin bread to go with the banana bread that will be gifts along with four pans of dark chocolate brownies. They go into gift baskets too. We are in our weekly cleaning mode with an extra push. I’m having the sewing/quilt group here on Monday this week and they have requested Matzo Ball soup. Brownies are for dessert along with pudding shots. They went over very well and Pam’s pot luck. Old doesn’t mean you have to be stodgy.

I haven’t been walking as much this month but when I do, the scenery is very interesting. Most people here don’t decorate outside for several reasons. Expense and ladder fears. Most of us aren’t allowed on a ladder anymore but I have my daughter to help. We make a good team. These are neighbors decorations. I just have a few lights.

Do you celebrate the Winter Solstice in any way?

Happy Solstice, Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too. Happy Everything. Celebrate life and all it has given us.

From my heart to yours,

Marlene Herself

  1. Oh I am SOOOO happy to be the first one to read and see this! First off, are you kidding me?
    “The Halloween mistake, machine embroidery.”
If this is a mistake? I want it. It is utterly adorable and perfect. Where is the mistake?
Second off, I wish I could visit you and your friends for just one get together so I could meet you all of course, but also, eat your food. I do so love good home cooked food. I really am sick to death of fashionable food. I home cook pretty much everyday, and I a home more than you think, and even when I am not, I still pick places where I can cook, and I do love to eat more than is reasonable so I have to portion it out.
I guess what strikes me most here is you, and the goodness you create and attract.
I am so lucky to know you.
    Merry Christmas sweet talented lady.

    • I’d be happy to send you my mistake if I had your address. I thought you might get a giggle out of the birdie talk too. You are also one that charms creatures into posing for you. You seem to know ever bird out there. I don’t cook as much anymore but really prefer my own cooking to restaurants. I love potlucks so I can try new things and expand other’s palate. None of the ladies had heard of Matzo Ball soup until last year when I made it for them.. They apparently loved it. So I shall honor the request. I wish you could visit too. Let me know if you are ever in the area. You can e-mail me at seamsright8@yahoo.com with your address if you are willing. Until them, Merry Christmas and Happy 2020.

  2. I don’t celebrate the Winter Solstice as such but I think inadvertantly I do.
Celebrate life and all it has given us is a great philosophy. It is not all about me,I and what I get – then is it? More of a wholesome celebration.
I love the embroideries and those pots are oh so fun! I thought is was a mistake when you typed pants pots – that is until I saw the photo. What fun!
I hope your Christmas is a beautiful, joyous one that filled your heart and warms your soul to the brim.
What a delightful year it has been corresponding with you through the blog, Marlene.
May there be many, many more.
    Merry Christmas.

    • Thank you so much for all your kind words this year. They mean a lot to me. The pants pots are a big deal around here. I saw them last summer on sale for $25. Pam and her husband made them with scrap wood and thrift store pants and shoes. She is an extremely talented quilter and embroiderer as well. I’m hoping for many more years but it’s not a given so I take no moment for granted. Have a very Merry Christmas in your new home and much gentler New Year. Hugs. m

  4. What a lovely post, Marlene. I’ve never really thought to celebrate the Solstice, but I love your suggestion to celebrate everything. We do have so much to be grateful for, don’t we? Pam’s table looks so festive and inviting. I love those pots with the legs! And Laurie’s quilts…what a wonderful thing she is doing. I’m not so sure about the “Halloween mistake.” I think your machine embroidery is adorable. Wishing you and your family a peaceful Christmas and good health and happiness in the new year. Thank you for the beautiful card and your kind words, Marlene. I appreciate your friendship and I’m so thankful to have met you through Word Press.

    • Thank you so much, Becky. The cat pads were my sons idea. Their cat loves to lay in the window but it gets cold there. I made some with flannel on both sides. Apparently, they slip off the sill. So this time I put the rubbery stuff on the back and hope it works better. The pants pots were for sale around here last summer but they were a bit expensive and I thought I could make one. Well, Pam and her husband did it for me. They are just adorable. It will stay inside until the rain stops for the summer. 🙂 Merry Christmas to you and yours and a very wonderful and kind 2020.

  9. What a lovely post to mark the turning of the year Marlene. I love your ‘mistake’ kitty – what mistake I’m wondering! I love knowing I have a version of your winter wall hanging too – though it is not out on display right now. Though, now I’m thinking about it, it could be, our new climate is not particularly summery despite the season. I love to see all the pretty trees and the lights, the food, the gatherings of folk to celebrate at this time of the year. Well done on making it through to another years end, let’s plough on now and wee the new decade in 🙂 Much love, warm hugs from us all down here xoxo

    • I put the colors in the wrong order so the kitty was more gray than black. I tried to do it over but that made it bullet proof. Too dense for a soft towel. It is hard to celebrate Christmas in the tropics but my winter wall hanging is just that. Up for winter. No mention of Christmas anywhere. The gathering of folks is what I love best about this time of year. I’ve sent a card but it will be late, of course. You’ll know then I’m always thinking of you. 😉

      • But the kitty will make a lovely wall hanging – nothing is ever ruined, just given opportunities for development 🙂 I think of you every time I use my bowl warmer, which is amazingly often ❤ I've consoled myself this year by remembering I always make birthdays and any time is a good time to receive a bit of happy mail. xo

  12. Sounds like a slightly slower (and low level!) but equally riotous good time was had by all 🙂 But I have one question: What is ‘Watergate’, and is it something you eat or drink? I only know the name as the Nixon-era scandal.
Lovely to see the work of all those busy and creative hands. A very happy festive season to you and yours, dear Marlene.

    • Yes, I’m ready for slightly slower fun. 😉 Watergate is a dessert made with pistachio pudding, whipped cream, (cool whip) crushed pineapple, coconut and marshmallows. It’s light and fluffy but very sweet. I don’t know why it’s called Watergate. It’s green so it goes with the season.

  14. Marlene – pudding shots?! No, definitely NOT stodgy. I wondered what the heck window sill pads were for a few moments, thinking they might be something to keep the draft out, but no, ANOTHER surprise. Gracie is one lucky cat. Is she contemplating the solstice or dying to get out and pop a few of the inflatable decorations?

I don’t celebrate the solstice but I do generally get up pretty early in December, light some tea candles and sip my coffee in the dark watching the candles flicker and let my thoughts wander. Its a quiet start to a busy day.

My daughter is the one who really goes all out for Solstice. She makes me more aware of things. Gracie is watching the kids at mom’s preschool come and go as well as the snow. She is an inside only cat and very much loved. Now she has a pad for almost every window. 🙂 Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Susanne.

  15. I loved this post, Marlene! I’m caught up on reading but have not been leaving comments. Soon, I hope. I love your kitty ‘mistake’. I read your explanation and immediately thought that it might make an interesting outside pocket on a bag . . .

Your food and drinks sound so good! It’s been years since I had my own place and could just decorate and cook (and bake) as I like, although we do have excellent traditional meals here. When I did have a place I decorated for Chrismas as much as I could. I love hand-made ornaments and that’s all we had on the tree, along with popcorn and cranberry garlands. Oh, we did have those tinsel icicles, which I liked to hang individually. They catch the light so beautifully and usually we only had kerosene lamps and candles, so it was very atmospheric.

I love how you celebrate everything! You are so right in being grateful for every day. My gratitude group is small but inspires me as you do. It’s good to find something to be grateful for every evening and I find it opens my eyes to how much I really have.

Much love and many virtual hugs, Marlene; I think of you daily. Thanks for being a part of my life; I’m especially grateful for coming across your blog ages ago!

I didn’t celebrate Solstice this year, but love to bring in the new year re-reading my journal from the year and doing a quiet meditation.Reading my journal helps me to remember/reflect on all that occurred during the year. I also like to do an animal card spread to see what’s coming the new year.

  20. I loved, loved this post, Marlene! I am “solar powered”, too. What a great phrase. Every sunset since the 22nd (I love sunsets) I have taken a moment to give thanks for the extra minute of daylight. See, I don’t look ahead at the long winter with doom and gloom because we’re on the upswing of light. I also feel way behind all the time starting at Halloween. But, when I look back, there are decorations, albeit rather minimal, and good memories of gathering with friends and family. Sounds like you, too! I love all your photos. They make me feel good. Bless the quilter who makes quilts for veterans. And bless you, Marlene. You are my glass-half-full, joyous friend. 😀

    • You are too kind, Jennie. I’ve always been solar powered so I turn every (LED) light on in the house during winter. Christmas lights add to the happy twinkle in winter. My friend that does the Veterans quilts is very dedicated. She fills a spare bathtub full, then turns them in. for donation. There is so much good in the world. I love coming by your place too. It always fills me up. Giant squishy hugs.

      • I take it that by you being ‘solar powered’ you meant YOU, that the sun gives you positivity and energy. I love that phrase to describe you, and I’m gonna use it! Christmas lights add even more, don’t they? How can your friend have the time to quilt a bathtub full of quilts? That’s proof of all the good in this world. Squishy hugs back to you, Marlene. 😍

      • Yes, I mean me personally, Jennie. I have been using that term for years.Even had full spectrum lights installed in my works studio years ago.. Humans and animals need light or we hibernate. 😉 Nothing wrong with that either if you don’t have a job to go to each day. ; My friends have housekeepers and gardeners, etc. I do it all myself. They are single minded on quilting. I’m all over the map with this and that. Butterfly style. 😉 Have a great weekend, Jennie.

      • Yes, we do need light. The hardest thing about moving to New England was the darkness in winter. We’re so far east that it is dark at 4:30 for a period of time. I have friends with housekeepers, too, so I know what you mean about having time to get things done. I guess if you’re single minded (not me) it makes a difference. Now, I have another new phrase to describe myself – butterfly style. I love that! From one solar powered butterfly to another, Happy New Year, Marlene!

  21. What a merry cheerful post that made me smile. First, I salute you, fellow woman who is solar powered. I am also, thus I find November and March the most difficult months in New England, since they seem to always be the cloudiest. But I celebrate the solstice in my head, celebrating silently the beginning of more light.
I love your embroidery and see no mistakes, just sweet cat and bird. Also, I never heard of cat pads before for the window sill – what a great idea! You are a clever, talented, sun(ny) woman, Marlene. Happy New Year to you. May 2020 bring you joy, peace, love. xo

    • Thank you so much, Pam. It’s hard when you need the sun but can’t take the heat. 😉 We (the sewing group) were talking about mistakes at our gathering on Monday. They said if you don’t notice it from a galloping horse, it’s all good. Ha. I’ll get there one day. The window sill pads were my son’s idea. He wanted Gracie to be warm in the window in winter. So he measured the sill, and I made them out of spare flannel and this time added the gripping material to the back so they don’t slide off when Gracie jumps down. I’ve found that gifts for the cat are more welcome than gifts for the parents of the cat. She is much loved. Hope your holiday was perfect in every way. Christmas hugs. M

The cute embroidery kitten with the pointy hat (I’m echoing the other bloggers – I can’t see any mistake, I think it’s perfect!!), the funny bird, the pants pots (I’ve never seen those before, they’re fab!), your lovely get togethers, your beautiful Christmas tree ( makes me wish I had one too but I make do with a couple of branches that I decorate rather lavishly 😉) – it all comes together to one lovely post! And yes – I celebrate all of it, and the solstice is very important to me too – there’s this feeling of hopefulness that come along with the lengthening of the days, isn’t there? Like walking south seems to feel like walking downhill as Tolkien put it, and each added minute of sunlight feels like you’re closer to summer. 😊 Merry Christmas again, my friend! May your days be filled with happiness and wonder! ❤

What a brilliant and original idea! I’m known for being ‘potty’ and have so many pots in the garden but nothing quite like this! As for the solstice I don’t mark it as such but start to look forward to the longer days … and now in mid January it’s a lovely and light in the afternoons… heavenly. 😀

    • Thank you for the visit, Annika. My machine and many “expensive” machines have special attachments that do the embroidery for you with direction from a USB drive. But things can still and often do go very wrong. I get frustrated with it but keep trying. The pants pots have been all the rage here for a couple of years and I was never willing to spend the money on them. My friend has a husband who did the wood work inside the pants and she scouted thrift stores for pants and shoes. I’ll have to take a better photo without the plant inside. The poinsettia that I’m killing. ;( Yes, I too am happy to see more daylight. Every minute is precious. My daughter celebrates Solstice. I’ve learned so much from her. Happy week ahead.
