Walking Backward

We ended  another month! How does that happen and why am I  always surprised? We are all sheltering from something we can’t see so our activities are limited.

Deep purple Lily on my walk

My walks were getting a bit routine. I usually start up the hill, go around the first left corner and text my quilting friend that I’m on her street. Since she is being extra cautious, she comes out on her front porch to wave and say good morning. We have a little conversation the whole neighborhood can hear from six feet apart and she sometimes shares what she’s been quilting. It’s more fun when you can show your work to someone that appreciates it. I get there early in the mornings. (For her)

Then I walk up another steep hill and finally start down again. I decided yesterday to go the other way since I’d left even earlier and stop at Emily’s last. Maybe she’d be awake when I got there. Changing my routine had me noticing things I had not seen going the other way. I think that applies to life in general. If we keep doing things the way we have always done them, nothing changes. Going backward changed my perspective on the neighborhood. Now I am carrying that idea into other areas of life to see what I can shake loose.

Today I finally finished the leftover quilt and the binding is attached to the front. I’ll hand stitch it to the back while I watch TV or listen to Ted talks or YouTube. I already have a project halfway done that I can’t show yet until all of our group are ready to share. I’ve also turned over the two charity quilt tops I finished first. Emily gave them to me already cut out. I did make some changes in the fabric since some went missing. It happens.

I’ve learned how to use Zoom to connect with our PF support group and wave at my sister at her house. We have learned to zoom together since we can’t get together. So many are using all kinds of media to connect. It feels a little backwards too. They kept telling us before to stay off the social media and spend more time in personal contact.

Metal sculpture puppy

While I Zoom, I do what I always do when listening a long time without speaking, I work on my embroidery. I did a lot of this at PF group so I don’t fidget. Embroidery keeps me focused on what I’m hearing rather than what’s playing in my head.

slow work in progress

#6 Hoping to start #7 soon.

The weather dried up enough to get a lot of weed pulling done. I filled the green waste can up and my daughter took it off the hill for me. It gets composted by the city and I’ve worked until everything hurts and yard looks almost nice again. As the rain comes to an end here, my list of outside chores goes up.

I’ll be posting less in the summer due to other demands. You really don’t want to see the list. Bored is not in my vocabulary. In a given day I go from one thing to the other until sleep claims me. I spend my sleep hours thinking up more things that need to be done.

I am…enjoying the moments

Do you like to change up your routine to gain new perspective on old habits?

From my heart to yours,

Marlene Herself

  1. It’s nice to be able to catch up with you Marlene, I’ll be off on my first walk of the day very soon. I’m running late this morning after a very good sleep that lasted an hour and a half longer than usual 😀 I’m impressed with you doing your walk backwards. When we are on our common walking route changing direction feels distinctly odd to me. I think the habit is so deeply ingrained. Which just proves I ought to persevere and change 🙂 I haven’t yet tried to start the car after it sitting idle for six weeks, and I am not planning on going out more than I do at the moment – so our walks are still around the local circuit. But I do miss being able to get to the beach or the High Road for the views.

    • That is quite odd that last night was the first time in ages I’ve had 1 1/2 more hours of sleep than usual too. I woke refreshed today. It seems a shame that people can’t go walk on the beach properly without it becoming a swarm of locusts with no respect. Going backwards felt very odd to me as well but noticed my thinking started shifting immediately. I’m heading back up on the hill since it’s quite cool to pull more weeds. They grow better than the plants. I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoy your art work. It’s so soothing and happy. I don’t want to gush but that’s how I feel about it. We do start the cars for just a bit to keep them in good running condition. I do not want to pay someone to come start them later. Keep walking though. I’m sure Siddy makes sure you do. 😉 Love and hugs.

      • It’s a nice bright 2/3 moon at the moment – maybe that has something to do with it. I’m glad you enjoy my makings Marlene – it is always a treat to hear that. No gushing required 🙂 My neighbour starts his car up and runs it for a good twenty minutes every three days. I always think, oh, I must do that too and then forget. I expect a miracle so don’t feel any concern – or maybe I’ll be getting the AA man round at some stage to jump start me 🙂

      • Or just drive Siddy round the block and pretend you were on a long journey. 😉 Twenty minutes is a tad too long I’d think. Who knows though.

I might need to follow your advice and start changing my routine a little. This confinement has us not even knowing what day of the week it is any more!

    • I found changing my direction helped change my thought patterns. I will tell Emily when I see her. She makes lovely quilts and has been a good teacher for me. Stay well and BTW, it’s Friday.;)

  3. “As the rain comes to an end here, my list of outside chores goes up.” Yes, indeed, very much the same here, since the end of the rain also brings the cooler weather, the winter, the time when the plants are more dormant and the perfect moment to do the pruning, weeding, digging up and moving around. I have no fixed route for my walks with Mouse. I try to do a different one each day so he gets to experience new smells and leave his mark in different places. The trick is to remember which of 5 or 6 potential routes I’ve done in the last few days!

    • This park has one way in and one way out. A few side roads are all uphill. At one time I did them easily. It’s one mile to the top of the hill and a mile back. 3 years ago I went all the way and covered most of the streets in between. After that, it’s highway and not safe to walk. I’d like more options but they all require driving to somewhere. I’m so glad you and Mouse have more to choose from.. Dogs get tired of the same old routine too. Hugs to all.

If we keep doing things the way we have always done them, nothing changes.” So true! I feel exactly the same way, Marlene. As terrible as this virus has been for so many, I’ve found myself more at peace than I’ve been in years. I’m writing more than ever, but have kept my eyes opened to things I’d forgotten meant so much to me. Good for you for learning Zoom. I’m scared to try! 🙂 Take care of yourself, friend. ❤

    • Thanks for stopping by, Jill. Glad to hear you are writing more. That’s my intent as well. I’m happier that I don’t have to make excuses for wanting alone time. It’s been quite lovely. Zoom is easy to learn if you have tech savvy kids around. Our facilitator had trouble with it today and couldn’t get us all connected so I guess I’ll have to loan my kid to her. 🙂 My mother was always learning new technology so I have to keep trying too. Keep up the writing.

    • Thanks, Wendi. I’ve had some very good teachers and have given up the notion of perfection. My goal is always ‘DONE’. I saw that deep purple in someones yard and had to photograph it. Not mine but with it was. 🙂

  6. Hey Marlene – I love that you walked the opposite direction. I find new perspectives when I do that. It’s like a whole different world!
I have managed to get all the weeds pulled in our yard, and next Saturday the new sod will be delivered. I can’t wait! Take care and stay safe 🙏🏻

I change up my walking route quite often, and you’re exactly right, I see things that I wouldn’t notice if I always went the same way.

    • Thank you, Becky. I’m going to have to see if I can find some of those deep purple lilies for my house. It was incredibly beautiful. It was interesting how different things looked when I changed direction. As the summer progresses, I hope to add distance again. Routine can get in the way of creativity but I like routine. ;( Sigh. Thanks for stopping by.

  10. I think that now that when fully retired, I wool be doing this, O be I work out a new routine to start with. Change brings revelations so your words, “If we keep doing things the way we have always done them, nothing changes,” is very true. Some of us might dislike change but we can also be glad of it. Humans desire it. And in changing perspective, we change and grow, too. Lovely thoughts and gorgeous quilts and stitching, Marlene.

    • Thanks so much, Amanda. I agree. We do not like change but change is inevitable and helps us grow in so many ways. We resist it the whole way and grumble. I’ve had so much change in my life that it feels like the ground is always shifting . Keeps me on my toes though. How much longer until you fully retire? I have loved not going to work. I have not loved the limited income. I’ll do with less income and more time to be and do. 😉 I was surprised at how different the same blocks turned out 3 years apart. My son’s has plush Minky fabric on the back. Mine has cheap leftover flannel but it is cozy to cover yourself on the sofa. I will still be behind in the things I want to do the day I die even if it’s when I’m 108. 😉 My daughter and son say I create work for myself. Beats sitting here wondering what to do. Stay well and enjoy.

  11. Thank you for the lovely post. I have enjoyed seeing how you spend your days. I try to walk in different directions when I go out, and it is surprising how different things look if you do them in reverse. Your friend has been busy with all the quilting. I love your redwork and the weeding is going great. My experience of this time is different to most peoples being caught mid-move with half our things already packed away in boxes which now clutter up the house! Doing anything requires careful planning to find space and materials. Hope you have a good weekend and stay safe.

    • Thank you for the kind words, Cathy. Being caught mid move in this situation could make a person crazy. I’m glad you are finding ways to cope. Hope the new move date works out. It hasn’t stopped anyone here that I’ve noticed. I have little choice of direction to walk here. This home park I live in has one way in and one way out. After that it’s narrow high speed roads. So I deal with it. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for your move so you can finally feel settled. I have your post open to read already. I think 2 of them. 🙂 Keep well.

  12. Your friend’s quilting is amazing! Also, I love the tip to keep your hands busy while “Zooming” so you focus on what is being said rather than what’s in your head. When I used to work, I often wished I could knit during staff meetings for that very reason. It would have been as well to keep my head down, too, so others couldn’t see the inevitable eye-rolls that happened almost every 2 minutes.

We finally have good enough weather to get outside and clean up the yard. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Liked by 2 people

    • Oh goodness, Susanne. You did make me laugh. Not letting others see those constant eye rolls is a good thing. I don’t think most people understand that we can be doing handwork and paying closer attention than if we are fidgeting in our seats looking at the clock, praying for release from the misery. We have rain again today so maybe I can get out there again tomorrow. It’s where I meditate. Thanks for stopping by and making me giggle. Keep well.

  13. What a wonderful post. I love that you talk to your neighbor with the entire neighborhood listening (why not? It was a good topic!), that you have learned Zoom, and that you integrate it into your life. We are getting through this.

    • Thanks for the visit, Jacqui. My friend never puts her hearing aids in and being more than 6 feet apart requires loud conversation. She’s pushing 84 and I’m just a kid at pushing 72. We must try to learn something new everyday to keep fully alive. It’s why I quilt. It’s like a giant, heavy jigsaw puzzle. 😉 Directions are always ambiguous so you really have to stretch the mind and you have something lovely and useful when done. 😉 Keep well.

  14. It’s good to see a post from you, Marlene, and catch up on your doings! I commend you for getting in the walks. Between work and my own writing, I’m pretty much on the computer from the time I get up until the time I go sleep. Thank you for the reminder that I really need to start getting more exercise.

    • The brain works better when you exercise the body. I often make my daughter walk with me at the end of her work day if only to the mailboxes and back. She’s setting a reminder on her Fitbit to move every hour if only around the house. I have no choice but to walk. I do take one day off but I’m doing household chores. It doesn’t count on FB as exercise though. ;( My daughter wants me to take more time to write my own life stories for her so I have to add that to my list. Now I must get some sewing done. Keep well and thanks for stopping by.

Even before you asked the question, I made not of your comment: “Changing my routine had me noticing things I had not seen going the other way” Yes, I agree completely!
I’m so glad to know that you are well and making do during these strange times. Take care!

  16. Love all these beautiful quilts and especially the ladybug pillow cases for your daughter! That metal puppy is great! And very cool with those sunglasses. 😉 How lovely that you get at least see your friend each day on your walk, and never mind the neighbours listening – I think we’re all guilty of that particular pleasure. 😉 I do like a change of perspective from time to time, and also think it’s very important too. Otherwise we would get stuck in the same-old, same-old. That deep purple lily is so beautiful, mostly I get to see blue and yellow ones but never this wonderful colour. Take care and stay creative and safe, my friend! Hugs!

    • Thanks for the visit, Sarah. It was so cold this morning on my walk but the warm is coming. No one was out today. I managed to get back home before the rain started. I’m going to see if I can find a place to buy that purple lily and plant it for next year. Assuming I’ll be here next year. 😉 Hope you are hearing good news where you are. We still have so many idiots here that just don’t understand what we are dealing with. Take care of yourself and your mom too. I’m going to go sew now. 😉 Hugs back at you. (( ))

      • It’s been very cold here too these past days but today we’re back to spring time! Wish we would get more rain though, our forests are bone-dry!
Our news are quite mixed, Germany’s opening up way too fast for my taste, lifting all kinds of restrictions as if the virus was already history – which it is not. Many idiots here too that don’t understand the severity of the situation. 😦
I’ve been cooking stewed rhubarb today and serving it semolina – one of my favorite childhood dishes and still so yummy! 😀 Now I’m planning to repot some of my petunias so that they can grow big and plentiful. 😉 Wishing you a lovely weekend, Marlene, take care and happy sewing! Hugs!

  17. Marlene, this was wonderful! I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this post. It started with your daily walk, which I finally started to do today. I am so screen bound with distance teaching. I must take a good long walk every day, to stay sane, stay healthy, and appreciate Mother Nature. I love how you changed your route and noticed different things. Your friend’s quilting is wonderful. I love those houses. And Marlene, you are Zooming? You go, girl! While I do this four times a week with my class, my co-teacher sets up the Zoom with the ID and password. I love the technology that these 30-year-olds have. Not my thing. I am amazed that you can embroidery while Zooming. I can’t multiplex. Isn’t it interesting that it helps you to focus on the Zoom, yet it would totally distract me from it. Well, I think you rock! It’s more than what you can or cannot do, it’s your whole attitude and perception. That’s what makes you terrific.

    • Thank you so much, Jennie. Life IS about attitude. I even bought an red Arizona rock that says “Attitude is Everything” My mother was a computer geek from the first moment they came out and kept upgrading. I took a page out of her book. My kids love that I don’t let technology scare me and keep trying new things. I know many that want things the way they have always been and life just doesn’t work that way. It’s job is to keep growing us. 🙂 It’s working overtime lately. 😉 Embroidery is mindless, meditative work and sometimes I’m listening to mindless conversation but my focus is always on the listening. You never know when there will be a nugget to take with you. BTW, I have a techy daughter living with me and we call my son tech support which he can do remotely. That helps me a lot. When I couldn’t get the sound to work on zoom, he logged in from AZ and changed my privacy settings so the mic worked. I also know when to ask the experts for help. It’s a vital sign of real intelligence. ;))) No one can know it all. We just need to know who’s smart at what. Can you tell I’ve had no sleep? Thanks for stopping by and keep walking, Jennie.

      • So, the computer geek gene is obviously a huge help for you to keep learning and going forward with technology. That’s wonderful! People might say that my gene is music or art or reading skills, but not technology. I do great (say my 30-year-old teachers), but it’s not in my gene pool. Hubby can multiplex like you. He keeps trying to help me do that. Ha! Bottom line is what you said, life is about attitude. I will be the glass-half-full, sparkling and polished. Always. And today was day two of walking. Sore, but motivated and forging on. I love your stories here, Marlene. Thank you! I wish I were your next door neighbor.

    • Thanks for stopping by, Erin. My daughter says she is uniquely designed to work from home. It’s not right for everyone. I do have her walk the half mile up and back to the mailbox with me when she is done working. She isn’t accustomed to talking to neighbors as I do on my way by. I’m not accustomed to having her here all week but we are working it out well. Life is nothing if not one big changing soup. Military life taught me adaptation skills very early in life so I’m fortunate. Maybe this will turn around for you soon. Taking care of your needs has to be essential. Hang in there.

I am lucky to have a neighbor so close I can walk by her house almost daily and another on in the neighborhood up more hills than I can manage right now. We keep in touch though and it helps. Busy is a good word. You probably don’t know the definition of ‘bored’ either. 😉 I will get to a table runner I can’t show until January but it will be done. 21. I am late in catching up with you again Marlene.. Wonderful to see what you have been up to. And your quilt is just beautiful so loved them all but I loved the birdhouse one. .. And your embroidery also … So much to do…
Likewise with myself… I hope you got my return email I sent on the second of May.. I put a link to my garden blog.. Showing what weeding I have been up to.. 🙂

And I can truly understand and appreciate the hard work that you are putting in with those Weeds Marlene..

The Fairy garden loved that… 🙂 I have three fairy doors in my own garden and the odd little fairy and little elf… My granddaughter and I when she was smaller would search them out as they had a habit of moving in the night… But froze when she was about… 🙂 It amused us both…. And she thought they were magic.. 🙂

I agree with you about routine and changing them… So many now have been given a chance to explore a different routine…
One good thing I am seeing from all of this dear Marlene.. Is Nature… She is thriving… blue skies, and it just feels lighter.. But that could just be me..

Sending love as I move onto your next post and catch right up again..

Love and Hugs dear friend… ❤

The fairy garden is also another neighbor’s work. I haven’t the time or energy for it. She always keeps a beautiful yard.
I’m trying to catch up too. Never enough hours in my day. I tire too quickly. Thank you for your visit. Love and big squishy hugs, Sue.

I saw her on my birthday beginning of May.. and its been 19 days since then.. Time is flying by.. ❤ So I know how you must miss your sister… I have a sister who is close and I think it was January I last saw her.. ❤ Much love and Hope you also got some Quilting time in 🙂

I know everyone has different skills, so I shouldn’t be envious, but I still am. Your garden is lovely, even the part you carve out of the forest. Your quilting is always outstanding. I love that you can impress me every single time you post on your blog. Every single time, Marlene. And you always add an important message that we can take and apply to our lives and become better people if we want to. Your magical touch is a gift to me. ❤

I still need to pull more weeds on the hill but have no steam in my engine. Thank you for your kind words. I do try to pass on something positive each time. Helps me stay focused in the positive. I envy those that can make music or draw. You are right, we all have our own gifts. I’m doing my best with what I’ve been given. Sending love and hugs.
