ISO an Island

It’s been longer than even I expected since my last post. Squeezing forty pounds of stuff into this two-pound bag has taken determined effort. It seems as though we bring in things that work better for my apartment and the kids carry out things that will go to a thrift store or yard sale.

First they finished my sewing table. He wanted to make sure it wouldn’t cave in from the weight of the machine. I couldn’t find filing cabinets to hold it up so he improvised.

Once the newly built by my son bookcases were complete and installed, I realized how many books I actually gave away. There is room for more on the new shelves! How did that happen? The last one is 4’ wide by 10” deep, built to fit the area in the hall. The bathroom door is so wide, it takes all the hall width to close it. Everything is strategic. My son decided after seeing the books on the shelves, the 4’ would need bracing in the middle.

In the search of more drawer space, (I have 2) we looked at all possibilities. Again, I wanted only things that could serve multiple purposes when I no longer need them. I looked at prefab cabinets of drawers out of wood and they were inadequate. Walking through the big box home improvement store, found us looking at a tool roll-away in black (On Sale). It had several colors listed but after much research, found the colors other than black were hard to come by. This apartment is just too dark for black so my son foolishly suggested spray painting it any color I wanted. Little did he know what can of worms he had just dumped on himself.

It’s the same color as my blog background this month.

It took longer than expected since they had a 10-day trip in the middle of it all but the end result of his ingenuity and fortitude was priceless! I was in love with my new island. Both he and his wife worked on this masterpiece. I want to have a showing with people lined up in the hall to see this thing of beauty and practicality. I’m still trying to decide what goes where and that still goes for much of the rest of the apartment. Things keep shifting until it feels just right.

My DIL trolls Craigslist and the thrift stores which can make some people roll their eyes but my goodness, she has found some really handy and beautiful things. I now have a sweet little bistro set for my porch at less than a fraction of what the original owner paid for it.

They brought a second little white wicker end table for my Mother’s Day gift found at a thrift store in perfect condition and it has a ‘drawer’! I love white wicker as it lightens up dark, heavy spaces.

I love white wicker

I also found a sweet little quilt rack on Craigslist that was here locally but we were all so busy that I couldn’t get over to see it and I was undecided if it was practical. I sent a note to the owner and he brought it to me. We couldn’t make one for the price I paid for this little sweetheart. I can put my napping quilts on it and not have to dig one out of the chest each day. I’ve met some very nice people through Craigslist. Maybe I’m just lucky that way but I guess right now I’m living on an island of delight.

Have you ever used things in an unconventional way?

From my heart to yours,

Marlene Herself

  1. Marlene, it looks fantastic, and you are so lucky to have such a hardworking talented family to help. I was noticing the other day that we hadn’t heard from you for a while, so it’s great to hear that you are getting settled in.
OK – now it’s time to get some projects going!

    • I have some almost ready to post about while the kids were doing the hard work. That will be next. I ran out of steam this month. Thanks for the visit. I’m close to where I can catch up.

  2. I love the island, Marlene! The color is beautiful. It reminds me of Pauline. Your home is looking more and more like you. Thanks for the update!

    • Thanks so much, Jill. Pauline is everywhere in my place. It’s funny how certain colors creep into your awareness. I never realized how many places that color already was in my life. This move has really taken a lot more energy than I expected. Glad it’s almost done.. Thanks for the visit.

  3. Hey Marlene! It looks like things are coming along. I LOVE your creative island idea, and the color. Take care, my friend 😀

    • Hi Missy, My son likes the color too so when he ends up putting it in his garage, he’ll have no trouble finding it. 🙂 They have used 2 roll away chests in their home. Better storage than we found anywhere else. Hope you had a great Mother’s Day. Hugs, M

  4. Wow, your new island is a thing of beauty to behold! I’m so pleased to see how much progress you’ve made toward transforming your new apartment into your home. My favorite repurposing find is a bootscraper (two horseshoes with a bar in the middle) we found in an architectural salvage place. It now serves as a handtowel rack in our downstairs bathroom.

    • Thank you so much, Cindy. I’m a very lucky person and I know it. They are great kids. My son said he went back and looked at some of my old blogs and realized how much work he’s done for me. Opps. 🙂

  6. Everything looks awesome, Marlene! I love LOVE your kitchen island! What a great idea! I was just thinking about you yesterday, and here you are! The older we get the harder it is moving. Whew! ❤

    • I’m never moving again, Jackie. I’m ending it with an even #. 36 that I can remember. He did such a wonderful job of dreaming up the top and carrying out his plan. I feel the same way about the island. I LOVE it! It makes me happy every time I look at it. Have I missed a post from you or are you going silent again? I understand. I had no bandwidth left for writing anything. Sending love and hugs. KIT. M

  7. Aren’t skilled family members great! I hope things getting done are now helping you to feel like you are “home” and giving you a sense of being more settled. You made me laugh out loud when you mentioned having extra room on your shelves for more books! It’s hard to leave space when books are an important part of life.

    • You know me well, Deb. I like leaving space for new books when the right books appear. It was like carving out pieces of my heart to give so many away but that’s life. I am feeling more settled every day. After tomorrow, I’ll be starting to finish projects and plan new projects but only those I work on. The kids get a break now. How are you doing up there. It’s been way too quiet on your end and I’ve missed hearing from you too. Hugs.

      • Mostly the same old stuff here Marlene. A few of my own small projects here and there plus the usual ups and downs of life in general. Getting closer to my short trip to Denver in June to see youngest, who now has a significant other in her life. I’m sure you’ve heard it’s still like winter up here. I’d really like to put my sweaters away for a few months.

  8. Well things are really turning out so well. I love what you guys did to that mobile toolbox. Replacing the top is genius. I had actually seen a similar one in Bunnings around here and thought it would be a great addition to my craft room space, but decided against it as it was black and like you, I am keen for light and bright interiors and furnishings these days.
That wicker stand with drawer is just so sweet!
There is much inspiration in this post and it certainly can pay off to think outside of the box. Well done, all of you!

    • Thank you, Amanda. My son likes to get creative with things and I’m more than happy to let him indulge. I’m fond of thinking outside the box myself. Spray painting that tool box was not an easy thing to do so I won’t sugar coat it. He had the pieces and parts everywhere. The end result was worth it to me.. Of course, I didn’t do any of the hard work. I’d like it if they made these more available in more colors but no one would have my seafoam green. 😉 Thanks for stopping by. I’m just about ready to start the living here rather than the moving in here. 😉

  9. Everything looks wonderful, Marlene! I love that color of blue paint…it all looks so bright and breezy.

    Liked by 2 people

    • Thanks so much, Becky. It was the perfect color and the LR furniture I’ve ordered is a slightly darker shade of that seafoam color. A blend between blue and green. It feels so fresh and alive compared to the paint color on the walls and ceiling. I’m not allowed to paint but I can draw the eye away from the unwanted. Thanks for stopping by.

    • Thanks so much, Jan. It seems like it has taken a long time to get settled but I really didn’t start until March 1 when I finally got my stuff from storage. Not a bad transformation for 2 months. There was a lot going on during that time as well so I’m delighted with the results so far. Ready to start sewing again now. Sending hugs and love.

As for unconventional reuse of things, My beach table at the lake was a giant spool once holding telephone cable. It had a metal ring in the middle that allowed it to hang and roll on a truck. That’s where I put the umbrella. Voila, shabby-chic drink bar. Your sewing table looks awesome too! Have fun getting back into your projects 💚💚 xK

    • Thanks so much, Cynthia. I was looking around my living room this afternoon and realized that a toy box I refinished 20 years ago and use as a coffee table is the only piece of furniture that is actually mine. I did buy the used quilt rack last week and the bistro set so it’s reused too. I think my bed is the only new thing in my apartment. I am almost settled now. Thanks for the visit.

  19. I love the island! The paint color is beautiful, too.

Currently half of our kitchen cabinets are an old office desk and credenza with a countertop on top. Eventually we will redo our kitchen, but for now it serves it’s purpose. Best of all they were free and we kept them from a landfill.

    • I would love to do something like you have done but this silly apartment has so many rules that nothing can be attached to anything. Did you put photos on your blog? I’ll have to go and look. I’m all for keeping stuff out of the landfill. This has silently become my favorite color and been sneaking into my decor for years without my knowledge. There will be more of it in the near future. Thanks for the visit.

  20. There is so much goodness in this post, Marlene. I love love, LOVE that rolling cart painted a beautiful aqua. I can only imagine the time it took to get it just right. It is on wheels, fireproof and sturdy only adds to its charm. Your son and DIL are so clever and really handy, too. I’m impressed with the bookshelves that fit where you can accommodate them, along with the charming white wicker nightstand with the requisite drawer. I love drawers. They allow you to contain while keeping things clean and out of sight till you need them. Your sewing room is coming along nicely, and who wouldn’t drool over a custom-made sewing table. I feel giddy just thinking about it. Everything you’ve done or acquired adds to the uniqueness of your new place. I am so happy for you. Sending a big hug your way. xo

    • Thanks for the visit, Alys. I think about you every day as I continue to sort and pare down even more. The kids will be able to use the roll away when I’m done with it so it will be much loved. Finding adequate storage was quite the challenge and this was a perfect solution. An old filing cabinet is getting the same treatment now. I gave away so much and now what I need has found it’s way to me. I will send a note soon. Love and hugs, M

    • Thanks so much, Dawn. The only new in this place is the island which will be handed down to my son later and my bed. I have ordered a sofa and chair hoping it will arrive soon. Everything else is make do or borrowed. It seems memories and creativity are what really matter at this stage of the game. It’s been fun making it come alive. Thanks for stopping by.

  22. WOW!! I am so impressed, Marlene . . . I love everything you’ve done and I’m so glad you are almost up to living in your space . . . My whole life has been similar, so I have plenty of appreciation for what you’ve done (and your son and DIL, of course). I, too, thought of Pauline (and Kelly) as soon as I saw the colours. Funny how some colours sneak up on us, isn’t it? I’ll have to find you on Pinterest next . . . Glad you are doing well. Sending love ❤

    • Thanks so much, Sue. This move took more of my energy than I expected and will be glad to have it all in place so I can concentrate on other things. I will support the community garden with funds but not work. I may get a chance to see them at work soon. My son is very much like me in that he wants to do everything. We flit from one hobby to the next always getting excited about something new to learn or do. DIL is very tolerant. He’s worked hard but enjoys being challenged. By next week, I might actually have most things in place. Then the real work begins. I will try to catch up this weekend. Thanks for being there.

As my computer in for repairs.

I’ve learnt how to bring notifications of updated blogs into the app notifications. But I’m way behind many new posts of people I follow some posting 4 a week. Too many to keep up with..
We do what we can when we can and not worry about it.

So happy you have your Son at hand.. and so handy lol

  24. Oh, my so beautiful. Your son is amazingly handy–and so is your DIL, but in different ways. Just lovely. I love the seafoam and white! I’m sure it was exhausting watching son at work so haha now you need to rest up from it before you tackle too much!!!

    Liked by 1 person

    • That was the last big project so we all get to rest now. Fortunately, I didn’t have to watch all the work because I had so much of my own here in the apartment. When the top was ready to attach, they brought it over so it would go through the door. The color is very gentle and I love it. Thanks for visiting my fun kitchen, Luanne. Now to get the rest of the place in shape. 🙂

  25. I am pleased to see all these developments. The sewing table is going to be such a help. You’re probably using it already. You needed that. The bookshelves are also important, and I’m glad you’re surrounded by your books again. I have to agree with you on wicker. I’ve always loved it, white or otherwise. The kitchen island – oh my goodness it’s perfect. It has wheels, a big top, and lots and lots of storage. Even the bar stools work with it. That is the perfect solution to your kitchen space. I am just tickled. And of course! The seafoam green is brilliant! I am in love with that colour, and how clever to think of painting the tool box. How clever to think of using the tool box! ha ha. I’m sure it makes it easier for Tech Support and DIL to help when you are so obviously delighted and grateful for the work they do. Sometimes that is payment enough. Love you and miss you and I’m glad that you have so many things to smile about.

    • Thanks so much, Crystal. I still have a bit of a mess in the S.R. but I’m finding all my tools and have completed on small project and the rest lined up ready to finish. Then I can start something new. I hope the kids know how grateful I am. I work at that. I had no idea how much I liked that color but as I look around, it’s been creeping into my life for years. My new sofa and chair (if they ever arrive) are a darker shade of that color. It’s energizing. I miss you and so wish I could visit. It’s all coming together here. I’ll send a note soon. Way behind. Maybe while I’m house and cat sitting, I’ll catch up. Love and hugs.

It’s good to hear your inner happiness coming out as you make this place yours. How nice not to have to think about all the outside work needed right now in the PNW. You are off the hook!
