Bright Lights

I’ve been a little under the weather for the second time in the last four months, so that meant I had to postpone all the chores on the list, just sitting with my computer in bed until even there, fatigue and coughing won out. I tend to wear myself out with the holiday that I love so much. I almost get it all up when it’s time to take it all back down. I do not like the last part.

Gracie is done with Christmas too.

The part of the Christmas holiday that I like most of all is the lights. It was fun to see all the Christmas decoration I kept after a deep purge two years ago. I knew my next place would have limited space, I just never expected it to be quite so limited. There was almost not enough room for the small table top tree my DIL found at the thrift store. The  LED lights on the tree also brightened my spirits and I didn’t have to turn them off. I was the only person in the courtyard area to have outside lights thanks to my genius kids. I think I mentioned they put the outside lights up with paperclips to protect the siding. The lights are Christmas for me.

It was still snowing

It was still snowing

One evening before Christmas, my son called to see if I wanted to see the lights the cities put up and some of the homes that they found extra delightful. Our cities are very small. I wasn’t expecting much from these communities. What a surprise I was in for when the kids drove me all the way up the mountain (heading south) to the smaller town to find one whole street lit up in a way I have never seen other than on TV.

In the darkest hours of December, there were so many lights, moving parts and synchronized music that it was like a fairy land. My DIL drove with me up front for a clear view and my son walking ahead to get more clear photos. The lights, action and music brought out the child in each of us hoping to capture the feeling and hold onto it for another year.

The news of these lights got around quickly. My 87-year-old neighbor, Everett had seen these displays a week earlier. He spoke of them with great exuberance. You are never too old to feel that childlike wonder. I was grateful that I had the opportunity to get out there. We drove quite awhile to every area that had gave their best shot at cheering their community up with the lights.

By this time my tree is down (not yet put away) and the lights had been turned off on the porch when another neighbor lamented that she missed them so much on my porch. I did too; so in the evening hours, I’ve turned them back on to give us here a slight lift as we go through the shift to more daylight. Now that I’m feeling so much better, the rest of the holiday decor will be placed back in its respective container before the next snow comes in and makes it impossible to get it to the rented storage space.

It looks like lace

The last thing to go in a box will be the Christmas gnome the kids painted for me with lights. It’s been on every night on the kitchen island. It will be sorely missed.

What are you missing most now that holidays are gone?

From my heart to yours,

Marlene Herself

  1. Great pics and Gracie looks cute! 🙂 Marlene, every winter, i get a coughing/cold type of thing that persists. I’ve had it for some time this winter but it is finally dwindling away. I should have gotten some horseradish because that often terminates the illness sooner. It helps dissipate the mucus.

    • As someone with chest complaints – Can I ask horseradish in what form?

      Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you, Tom. My son has had hand tremors most of his life and likes to work with a tripod as much as possible but it wasn’t possible here. Many photos were unusable but those he got were almost as good as the real thing. Gracie is a curmudgeon. Pretty and quiet but cranky. I’ve never had horseradish but I’ll contemplate it. I NEVER get sick. Haven’t had anything other than catastrophic challenges in years. That’s why this is so shocking. Thanks for the visit.

    • I missed Christmas as we know it, entirely last year so this was a plus. Seeing the lights was also a bonus. Change is hard. We are getting 1 more minute a day and soon maybe 2 minutes a day. Take care of yourself and enjoy. Hugs. m

  6. Christmas lights are so pretty especially if there is real snow on the ground. Those displays were impressive.
Snow is what I miss most at Christmas. Once you have had a snowy Christmas, you want one every year and anything less pales in comparison. The mood is different. I miss the feasting and everyone smiling at the table filling their tummies with good food. But I don’t miss the prep work and the packing away of ornaments. I always have a stepped Euro/Scandi electric candle that sits out for a month or so. Like your gnome it brings joy. Sounds like you had a lovely Xmas and are well recovered now. Good to hear.

    • I love the snow as well, Amanda. My DIL wanted snow for Christmas and was gifted it. I have a set of electric candles that were my mother’s that I put in the window for the month of Dec. So surprising to find them in the tub of lights I gave my son. He’ll get them back later. 🙂 The food was light and easy this year with my DIL and her 83 year old dad doing the heaving lifting on the meal. We were happy with the light load. Hope you had a good one as well. I’m finally starting to be able to think again. 🙂

    • Photographing lights is a challenge when your hands shake a lot. My poor son has always had tremors in his hands like my dad did. He managed to work around the issue and keep a little of the cheer for a little longer. Glad they cheered you as well. Thanks for the visit, Val.

    • Thanks so much, Jill. I am SO much better already or you wouldn’t be seeing a blog. I want lights up all year too especially in the dark winter months. The outside lights will stay but the tree needed to go. It was on my cutting table and there was no where else to put it. Have a great weekend. Love and hugs.

    • I really have nowhere safe for any display so it will have to be packed up soon. My son and his wife worked hard on the gnome so it’s very special to me. Having a Christmas was a gift in itself and I’m grateful. Thanks for the visit and hope you are doing well there also.

I hope you are feeling better each day. I also love the lights and enjoy seeing them when I can. I have over 600 led lights on my tree and it is still up, both my son and I enjoy it so much I haven’t had the heart to take it down yet. I will call soon, if fact the next time I’m making the walk up the hill, so that you can encourage me to keep going. I saw Wayne yesterday and he is fine and asked about you. Talk to you soon.

    • Good morning, Diane. Thank you for the visit. I’m still in strength building mode adding a little each day. To not get sick in 30 years and then get a virus twice in 4 months is shocking my system. Today the kid will be here to help me put my stuff in the two pallet space I have in the garage here. I’d love to keep the tree up too but it was on my cutting table. 🙂 I needed it. We are heading to breakfast at the senior center then to work. Wayne and I keep missing each other on calls. Hope we find a way to connect soon. Have a good walk it was 22 out there this morning. 🙂

  11. I liked my lights so much that I decided to keep up one last string of fairy lights in my kitchen permanently. For the rest, Christmas has been packed away but is still waiting in the laundry for me to summon the willpower to pull down the attic ladder and climb up there to put everything away. Get better soon, dear friend.

  13. By now, I hope you’re feeling much better and stronger, Marlene. I like the lights that go along with the holidays. Luckily, they keep some of them, on the lower portions of the trees, here in the Square where I live.

  14. I’m glad you’re feeling better and that you got to see those lights! It looks like even the telephone lines were lit up. How did they do that? I have put away my Christmas decorations and I do miss the lights. Still, I have candles and I light those some evenings. Days are already getting incrementally longer and I’m looking at seed catalogs…

    Liked by 1 person

    • You are thinking what I thought! How did they do that. I’m guessing that someone on that street works for the phone company and may be a lineman. I’ve lived in bigger cities without that kind of display or neighborhood cooperation. I record sunrise and sunset each day and we are getting a minute a day each day. Soon it will be 2. I miss the extra light of summer but not the heat. Have not turned my heat on this year yet. It was 22 last night and this place stays warm from the hall heaters and the protection of the courtyard. It has the same effect in summer though. My decorations are almost ready for my son to put in storage. Probably tomorrow afternoon. A 3 day snow and rain storm moving in on Sunday so want it done by then. Bring on the seed catalogues. Thanks for the visit.

  16. Hi Marlene! I’m sorry you’ve been sick twice. Like a little kid would say, “That’s not fair!”

Your son and DIL gave you a wonderful gift, driving around to see the lights. I too, enjoy seeing the bright twinkles.

We went out to Sisters for a concert in early December. The whole town was magical, all dressed in white lights. It was cold, with a touch of snow; truly a winter wonderland.

Take care, my friend. And I know you will find new joy in this new year.

    • Thanks so much, Missy. I’m old enough to know life isn’t about fair. It’s been at least 30 years since I’ve had anything like that. But my son says I bounce back faster than most.
You are correct. Taking me to see the lights was indeed a gift in itself. They had taken her mother the weekend before.
I have always wanted to go to sisters but never made it. Wanted to go to the quilt show in July. It’s a pain not to be able to drive very far anymore. But that’s life. Thanks for the visit. Hope you are doing well in this new year. Hugs.

  17. So sorry to read you have been unwell and in bed Marlene.. As I send you love and healing energies over the airways my friend..
I so hope you are soon on the mend.. I know how those coughs and cold linger on especially this time of year. And with your chest… I can only imagine its been tough to shake..

Loved that you got to see those amazing Christmas lights… What wonderful photos… And I can see why you would get so attached to that wonderful Gnome…. What a delightful little chap he is… So I can see why it would be hard to box him for another year..

The snow, despite the harshness of the storms you have all endured out there, still never fails to look pretty, especially on trees…

Loved your visit to see Cyril in the progress of his fashion show 😉 Sending you huge hugs my friend… Keep warm, and take care of yourself Marlene… Lots of love and well wishes my friend for this New Year…
    Much love… ❤ Sue xx

    • Thank you, Sue. You are correct. This is a slow recovery process and still requiring much more rest than I’d like. The wind was blowing so hard this morning that it blew the snow right off the trees. We get a regular winter here. Nothing like on the east coast or the California coast. We will get several snows over the next two weeks but nothing our area cannot manage. Snug as a bug here. Made lentil soup today for my dinner later. 🙂 I’ll do some writing today and sewing tomorrow. Maybe a nap somewhere. 😉 The gnome may find a home inside for the year. Next year is not guaranteed, so he will stay somewhere to light my way at night. He may find a spot on new shelves my son is putting in my sewing room for inspiration. Still love Cyril to pieces.

      • Do you know Marlene I’m pleased you said that about your gnome. I had a feeling you might use as a night light, but I didn’t want to presume lol

We may a some snow in the next week but due to the lower ground we are on the higher elevations get it before we do.
That soup sounds just the thing. I’ve had a few stews on the go since Christmas, nothing quite like a warming soup or stew.
Stay snug, and I too get my fair share of naps lol . All healing while we are sleeping
        Much love Marlene ❤️ 😍 💖

    • Thanks for the visit, Kimberlee. I agree with you on all counts. The extra kindness and the mail are parts I wish would be present all year long. I do write cards to friends all year but many my age can no longer write by hand. So I’ll happily take a text or email. The lights are not missed as much once we get more daylight but those displays! They were absolutely wonderful. I’m glad the treats are seasonal though. My waistline couldn’t handle them all year.

  19. Like you, I love the lights of Christmas. The lights bring on wonder, nostalgia, joy, and hope. We have wonderful lights here, too. It’s so cheering. I’m glad you had lights and that others could also enjoy them. I am sorry to hear that you’ve been under the weather, though, and I hope you’ll be back to yourself soon.

    • I’ve been thinking about you a lot lately and happy to hear from you here. There is no point in doing anything if it doesn’t bring joy to as many others as possible. I think the lights do that. I’m technically fully recovered. That said, I’m still congested and exhausted. Needing more rest than before. I think you might know something about that. Stress can do the same thing. Hugs heading your way.. m

  21. Marlene, it’s the lights. Yes, that’s what makes me feel like a child again, too. I was thinking about your outdoor lights. Why can’t they stay up through winter? Light is the celebration in winter, and it’s not just Christmas. Your neighbor is right, it makes her feel good, so leave them up all winter.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I think they will stay up until I’m gone from here but only turned on in the winter months. Prettier than that orange light across the courtyard from me. I just won’t turn them on in summer. They are well protected from the elements so I won’t have to ask the kids to put them back up again. If they make 2 of us happy, it’s worth it. I’ve never cared about presents at Christmas but the lights and decorations just delight me. Glad you see that too. Hugs.

  22. Hi Marlene, I hope you are recovering. I also love the lights, and have a few strings of LED battery powered ones that I keep up unto Valentines Day. Sometimes I’ll just light them when all the other lights are off and watch them blink. It’s great therapy when it’s so dark for so long this time of year.
I love the little gnome too, in a way it reminds me of our little German Santa that our dad bout in 1946. ‘Some things just seem to encapsulate the feelings of the holidays, and make the nights a bit brighter.

    Get well soon!

    • My lights are plugged into the porch light socket so no porch light. I love the colored lights more and apparently so do some of my neighbors. I can turn on the switch inside and stay warm. Lights are very helpful this time of year. The gnome obsession hails from my children’s grandmother who was Swedish. I always have one under my tree. I think the Swedish and German background in our families have had a very strong influence in how we celebrate pretty much everything. Whatever this is, it’s hanging on for dear life. No fever but cough and snizzles remain along with fatigue. I’m not the only one here with it but I’m so much better than I was. Thanks for the good thoughts and the visit, Lou.

  23. Hey hey Marlene! What a spectacular display in that town. Bravo for them. With LED lights, they’re gentle on the power bill, so that’s a plus.
Sorry to hear you got sick after the holidays. All the activity and hoop-la takes a lot out of even the most seasoned Holidayer.
Nothing to miss here yet, since the dang tree is still up and decorated, LOL. It was up till March one year. I don’t know when I’ll get motivated to get it put away, it only went up Dec 23 because I was a bit busy.
Every year I say, I’m not going to bother with a tree. But every year it goes up (all-be-it, later and later each year). We’ll see what happens next year. Maybe I’ll get things going earlier. Toodles noodles 💗 K

    • I don’t know who makes up the rules about when things should be done but I’m a big rule breaker these days. It gets done when it gets done. I’ve done the take down in March too. Too much snow out to get stuff into a shed so it just stayed up until we could get out there. I enjoyed it all that time so who cares what others think. My lights are staying up. The gnome is staying in the kitchen or somewhere. He’s a happy fellow so he lights up my kitchen at night, just enough. I’ve always wanted to do a Christmas in the spring or summer when I could actually get out and shop. We got 4 more inches of snow today. Relax and enjoy. You make the rules in your house. 🙂 Hugs.

When my children were in middle school we lived in an area for awhile that did up lights and we went to look at them once. They seem to have become more important as I’ve grown older. I am finally feeling much better, thank you. Have a wonderfilled week.

  28. I came looking for you today because I hadn’t seen a post for a while, and I see that I missed one! Good grief. I just love that photo of Gracie, the way the paper curls around her. I know what you mean about lights. They can add so much, especially in these long, dark days of winter. I have my purple LED lights up around the front window in my living room always. I put them up for Christmas the year I moved here, in 2015, and liked them so much they never came down. I think the same as you: when they’re LED, I don’t have to turn them off. So, they glow away 24×7, for seven years now, ha ha. That gnome is so wonderful, but I agree with you and would not keep it up because of the Christmas tree. I hope you are still feeling better and I hope that’s it for viruses for you. I guess your run of good luck not getting a cold came to an end, and I know how hard it is to get sick again. For three years during the pandemic I never had a sniffle (for me that’s a long time), but now that I’m not wearing a mask anymore – boom! I’ve had two colds and remembered how much I hate being sick. Are you still in the snow? I guess it must get cold enough to stay, where you are. I have snow on the ground right now, but it will likely melt soon. It doesn’t stay cold here, as you know. Well, have a nice day my friend. I miss you and I love you. Happy belated Valentine’s Day. ❤

You will build your immune system again the longer you go without a mask. I only wear one when I’m sick if I have to go near people. To hard for me to breathe with one. We had a BIG snow Tues night. Just getting shoveled out of here. It was minus 2 degrees this morning. Brrr! The kid is very attached to the gnome since he painted it and makes sure it’s lit up every time he comes by. I guess it’s staying for a while. Makes a good night light. Hugs. I’ll try to send a note soon.
