My Spring

I found this and it spoke to me.

This week, my spring got up and was snowed upon. Our weather can’t seem to make up its mind and neither can I. One minute I’m full of aspiration and the next I find myself looking with great longing at my bed. I’m blaming the weather and the straight line of the five planets. That has to be the reason. It can’t be procrastination, can it?

Made this years ago and it needed to come out in the hall to play

What do you do when your spring has sprung a leak? I did little things and waited it out.  This is a photo of what I woke up to this morning.

Snow

We get a clear, cold day followed by intense, high winds, more rain and then finally, hopefully, some real sun. Spring is by definition, confused. A foot in winter and one trying to remind us summer is on the way. I spent much of this month confused too. Wanting to move forward and realizing forward wasn’t ready for me yet.

A gift from my kids

My craft projects from the last two Tuesdays are still waiting to be finished. I’m trying not to see them.

I’m just not getting it done…yet

As I prepared the photos for this post, I realized how busy we have been in the last month! If I didn’t photograph everything, I would think myself a lazy slug. I’d rather be reading a book and have done that in bits and pieces too.

My last post showed a redo of sewing room and a promise of shelves minimally attached to walls. There are rules here. As promised, photos. Lots of teamwork involved.

The sewing room is in constant motion. I had a board made by my last husband almost 20 years ago that fit over the large ironing board to press large pieces of fabric. It was in dire need of new covering and padding. My son loaned me a tool that I wanted to adopt. It made my job so much easier! I’m so happy with the results. I think you can see the old cover in my last post. I also bought myself a new, cordless iron. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it but I do, very much.

April is knocking at the door and I have a small wall hanging cut to put up. The fabric in the panel that was cut apart turned out to be twisted and the measurements aren’t holding true so the putting together process will take a bit longer. There are only nine days till Easter but hopefully, it will read more spring than a single holiday. I have so much in the pipeline and am trying hard not to add more to the list. Helps to stay off Pinterest and the fabric sites in general. I, at least finish one thing and am almost done with another.

So as our approach to April is imminent, I’m hoping to find my spring back in my step and creativity.

I had the umbrella for years and $ store flowers . Found idea on Pinterest.

How about you? Is there a spring in your step as March has come to an abrupt end or are you still trying to bury your head under the cozy blankets?

Gift shop bucket on sale in November, thrift store gnome, add flowers and spring is here

  1. We had a big dump of snow recently as well. My husband is talking recklessly about swapping out the snow blower for the mowing deck on our lawn tractor next week. Thoughts of having fun with summer day trips have been entering my mind of late.

    • Tell him not to do it!!! It will bring the snow on for sure if he does. We can get snow all the way through May up here. Everyone here keeps saying they are done with the snow but I know better than complain. That just brings on what you don’t want. I’ll be happy to get to walk outside again. I had my windows open a good part of the day. We are all ready for some sunshine. I hope spring shows up there soon. So many across the country in every direction are just being hammered with rough weather and are ready for it to end. Lets hope that is the case. Thanks for stopping by, Liz.

  2. Actually, a little of each. A few covers over my head and some creativity happening in my sewing room. Your room looks great! I just made some changes to mine as well and I’m so excited about it. I even had enough room for two friends to come over and help me with a project. We fit nicely in my room (with just a little rearranging). Loving my new sewing machine, my new dresser to store fabrics and even managed to keep my bookcase where I have folded fabric. I’m excited for a real spring and some sunshine! We’ve been getting a peek of the possibilities!

    • Giving the sewing room a redo helps lift your creative spirits, doesn’t it? What kind of machine did you get?? You probably mentioned it in your letter but I forget. We have sunshine today but wind comes with it. I’ll take it. I don’t have friends here that sew. At least not yet. Thanks for the visit, Jan.

  3. The Cascades are getting snow dumped but just rain down here. I would like so much to stop turning my heat on but it still gets chilly in the evening so it goes on for a few hours before bed. I think after so long I’ve learned never to expect much weather-wise here and just take each day as it comes Marlene. Easier than complaining about it year after year 😉

    • It’s when you are sitting still in the evenings that the heat feels so good. PNW is always going to be wet and I always had to find ways to bring sunshine into my space. We got more snow that they’ve had in 12 years here. I don’t mind as much as most since I’m definitely used to dark and gray. 😉 Wishing you sunshine. Hugs, M

  4. We went from the 80’s in February to below freezing in March. ☃️ I’m ready for warmth. Your home looks beautiful, Marlene.

    • Weather has been all upside down lately everywhere, Jill. I’m lucky that my apartment gets so much heat from the halls that I rarely need to turn on my furnace. It will be up to 68 degrees all by itself. It’s the summer months that my big bills come in. I hope you get warm soon. Hugs, M P.S. I read your post but comment wouldn’t take. I’ll try again.

  5. We’re topsy turvy. I’m definitely noticing it gets dark earlier and the midday sun isn’t *quite* as scorching hot, the thunderstorms are shorter and smaller, and winter is coming, hurrah! Time to fetch out my seed packets and clean my pots and get some starts going.

    • You look forward to cooler weather as we look forward to warmer. I’m an anomaly. I don’t fare well in heat so I prefer cooler months but those seed packets need the heat so I try not to complain. Just silently moan to myself. 🙂 We are getting between 2-3 minutes a day more. You are probably the opposite. Enjoy cleaning those pots. Thanks for the visit. I’m getting to my list of TBR blogs shortly. Hugs.

  6. Marlene, you have so many things going on. I’m impressed with all you get done, and I’m not at all surprised that you look longingly at the bed. That ironing table is brilliant. I like that it fits over your regular ironing board, but can still be removed if needed. Nice job recovering it, and three cheers for good tools. I’m glad the shelves are now situated, so you can get back to sewing and quilting. I’m trying to place them in the room; are the shelves behind you when you’re at the sewing machine, or are they on a sidewall?

I’m ready for warmer weather, but I hope it arrives slowly. I prefer pulling weeds in the cold/cool weather. We’re also nervous about mountains of snow melting too quickly and causing flooding as the melt fills the rivers, streams, etc.

    • I’ll take another picture of the shelves for better perspective, Alys. I’ll email it to you. The old folks here are ready for warm too but you know me. I have my fan running and no heat on in here. The halls are all at 68 degrees and if I move too fast, which I try to do, I start to overheat. I’ll be able to start walking outside in the next week or so. I also understand all the concerns about the snow pack melting too fast. Saw the weather news last night and looks like the Sierra’s and Cascades are going to get more snow. Hugs and love, 🙂 M

      • Thanks for taking another photo, MH. I love peering into spaces and seeing all the details. I’ve always enjoyed that. My son loves snowboarding, so he’s thrilled about the extended snow season. He bought a ski pass and joined his university ski club for many weekends. They are all getting their money’s worth this year. Tahoe won’t close till July!

  7. For someone wanting her bed you are incredibly productive. Love your Spring additions. March had been awful here. Rain and more rain, then 2 hours of sunshine to fool us and then more rain. Clocks went forward last week and my body clock is all over the place! Roll on real Spring.

    • I think many of us are feeling like you all the way through this part of the month. I’m not catching all my comments where they need to be. Sorry for the delay here, Cathy. I am so grateful Arizona doesn’t move it’s clocks back and forth. This years weather was enough to deal with. High winds and no summer has decided to jump the gun a bit. Spring always gives us a bit of everything. That way everyone has something to complain about. 🙂 Warm will be here before you know it, Cathy. Hang in there.

  8. I love the blue morning glories on the quilt. We just had some severe storms last night with tornadoes and high winds, part of the same storm system that hit Little Rock. Otherwise we’ve had a surprisingly mild winter. I finally accomplished getting out of Chicago – huge relief – but am in temporary quarters for now while looking for a way to get a loan for a house. It’s good to stay busy but I like staying in bed too.

    • Everyone here is ready to see those Morning Glories hung up in the hall too, Aquila. I’m hand stitching the binding as fast as I can. Hopefully by Monday. Getting out of Chicago is a huge deal! Congrats. It’s not the city it once was. I”m in a very small town with next to nothing comparatively, but I feel safe and comfortable here. I hope you find the accommodations you are looking for quickly. I’m renting here and never plan to buy again. It works for me at my age. Keep me posted and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

      • The relief from getting out of Chicago was huge. I’m in a small town too at present and the quiet is very welcome. I was on a very busy street and it was almost never quiet and if it was it wasn’t for long – five minutes at most, That constant noise took a toll and it’s been six months that I’ve been out of there and i am finally feeling more myself. I’ve found a couple houses it’s getting a loan that’s the hang-up. Thanks for the crossed fingers.

  9. Love the space you are creating Marlene. It’s so important to have your home base, no matter what Spring is doing right now. Warm days and lovely sunshine are just around the corner. 💝

  10. Marlene, I have been feeling out of place, not really happy, yet nothing I can put my finger on. Reading your post, it all comes together. Really. The winter/spring dance is one thing, and then (like you) we finally had some work done, the 1963 bathroom updated. As I looked at your photos of all you had done in the sewing room, shelving and that big cover, I smiled. It feels good to get long overdue projects done, even if they make you feel unsettled. Two weeks of men arriving at our small house @ 8:30 means up and at ’em, showered and ready to go bright and early. I’m tired. But, like you, projects are getting done and spring should be here soon. Thank you for always giving me a big dose of practical positivity, Marlene.

    • I’m glad I was able to help you put a finger on the underlying issue there, Jennie. Most of the folks around here are “unsettled” in some way. Weather, whether we like it or not, has a huge affect on our physiology. The winds here are so high, we can’t open our windows so I have AC on at night. It’s going to be 24 degrees but inside these places get very stuffy. I’m up and out the door every morning by 5:45 to unlock outside doors but I can do that in my pajamas. No one else is up around here. I would not like to have anyone in that early. Getting projects done feels so good in the end that it’s worth the discomfort. Your comment does my heart good and that’s what keeps me blogging.

  11. I’ve had some ups and downs lately. Last week felt way too overwhelming to be even trying to make progress on anything but sheer existence. Saturday night I slept 10 hours straight and that seems to have been what I needed.

    • That good sleep is a perfect solution to weather gone wild, Erin. Lots of people are feeling it but don’t understand why they are so out of sorts and drained. Yesterday felt like an almost out of body day. We have high winds for days in a row that affects our inner ears and we wonder why we are out of balance. Sometimes you just have to give into it. Spring is a most unsettling season. I’m calling it a night too. Thanks for stopping by. Keep taking care of yourself.

  12. Hello from AZ, my friend! We made it to Green Valley, just south of Tucson. We have spring and sunshine. The wildflowers are amazing due to all the rain. This is a big change from the current weather in Bend.

It looks like you’re making a lot of progress in get your sewing/craft room set up and organized. Isn’t it nice to have some help? Keep writing, dreaming and creating! Take care, Marlene!

  13. Here I am, right into Easter, yep behind again…so Happy Easter to you.

Love your family making sure you’ve got things at hand, and it’s safely organised etc.

My Autumn is having difficulties with what it should be doing as well, we seem to having a lot of spring rain – and then wonderful warm summery days. And not much happening in the “leaf/leaves dept”

    • Weather is shifting patterns EVERYWHERE! It’s how the earth works whether we like it or not. We have gone from a low of 14 degrees (-10 c) to a high of 78 degrees (25c) in one week. My family is very busy with their own work so I appreciate more than they know the time they can give me in help. Most living here in this building are not so fortunate. I LOVE autumn and winter. Not a fan of summer as much but tolerate spring because it brings more daylight. Keep taking care of yourself and thanks for stopping by, Catherine.

  14. Marlene, I commiserate with you on the weather. Where are you, again? Those of us in the northeast (western NY, in my case) are waiting desperately for Spring’s arrival. This week will be darn nice but next eeek looks foreboding. Wow, you have some good hobbies. The shelving looks great. Ryobi makes nice products for the home ‘fix it’ projects. Take care.

    • Your comment was lost in my brain fog. I am so sorry it’s taken so long to find it and respond, Steve. Can I blame the weather? ;( Because we are not supposed to “attach’ anything to the apartment walls, my son had to get creative to get things off my work table. He loves his Ryobi cordless tools. I wanted to confiscate the staple gun. It worked better than the electric one I have. I have good tools also. With so many hobbies, tools are important. I LOVE tools. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, Steve.

  15. You always have a lot of balls in the air! That’s awesome! March and April so far have been super busy crafting wise. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to NYC but it’s the pinnacle of busy. I’m looking forward to having a couple of quiet slow days at home after this weekend. We’re getting a major landscape project in our yard this year, so I’ll forgo all the pots I normally plant up back there and focus on small projects in the house. I like your ironing board idea! Enjoy it all. The snow looks refreshing just now. It’s going to be 87 F in NYC today…ferg! 💗K

  17. Oh this is a great post! Though I come at it a month late, you are describing my struggles with Spring this year. And others too, I think. My brother in Montana was also complaining about a few inches of snow earlier this week. It’s nearly May! Come on, Mother Nature.

I also love how you wrote that if you didn’t take photos, you would think of yourself as unproductive. Me too. I know you tease about how much I stay busy, but I personally don’t keep track of all of it. I can get to the end of a day and think I must have done absolutely nothing, but then I look at my texts to Pedro and Kellen, and look at my photos, and I see that I actually did lots of things. My Christmas letters are like that, too. I sit down and collect my stories from the year and think it’s amazing that I packed it all in. You are just like that: always finding a new project to immerse yourself in, while keeping up so many other things, like blogging, journaling, and collecting fabric :o)

Your sewing room always looks welcoming and bright and inspiring to me. It occurs to me that if you change the room, you are adding interest and stimulation to your days. This is vital when it’s still snowing or gross outside, and you are trapped inside. I’m glad you have things on the walls that keep interesting you. I LOVE your rabbit that went to play out in the hall.

So anyway, I’m late, but Hi. I am missing you.

    • I’m always a day late and a dollar short, Crystal so don’t apologize. I truly can’t keep up with it all and get overwhelmed. Found a way to deal with that. The rooms I work in need to be inspiring. I have walked in and walked right back out when things were disorderly. It takes too much energy to work in a space that doesn’t function well. I have stuff to go to storage from Valentines and Easter decorations that will free up floor space and make me feel better. It’s on the list but not for today. Only the shirt today. I hope you find a place with space for your creative endeavors. Spring is hard on many and the solar flares that hit us recently didn’t help. People forget that we are physically influenced by weather, planets and so many other things. Hang in there and I miss you more.
